In terms of inspiration / spiritual motivation, have you considered St Sebastian, patron saint of archers and healers ? He was “popular” in the Italian Renaissance, especially da Vinci. Ironic that you released this clip at a time of year, when he’s venerated. I like your reference to dogs. My earliest memory (pre verbal) involves interacting with the family dog. I still find them “uplifting”.

Sir, I am your big fan and eagerly waiting for your podcasts. The way you explain everything so clearly is truly remarkable. Sir, I have a humble request for two podcasts-one on psychological tests and another on developmental mental disorders. If it’s possible, I’d be very grateful. And if you ever need a lab cleaning person, please don’t forget me!

**Key Takeaways: Reset Your Brain: Andrew Huberman & Jordan Peterson** ## Key Insights ### 1. The Human Animal and Multiple “Personalities” - **Foundational Idea**: Humans possess multiple ingrained motivational systems-often referred to as *impulses*-but a more accurate and powerful concept is that these are *subpersonalities*. - **Biological Roots**: These subpersonalities are rooted in evolutionarily ancient brain structures (like the hypothalamus) that govern fundamental drives (e.g., rage, thirst, sexual desire). - **Polytheistic Parallel**: In various cultures, these drives were personified as different gods (e.g., god of war, god of love), highlighting how each motivational state can take on its own “identity” if allowed to dominate. ### 2. Moving Beyond “Impulse” and “Inhibition” to Integration - **Impulse vs. Integrated Strategy**: Traditional views suggest that higher cortical areas (prefrontal cortex) simply *inhibit* impulses from lower brain centers. However, Jordan Peterson emphasizes *integration* over mere suppression. - **Freud vs. Piaget**: - *Freud’s Inhibition Model*: Saw the “super-ego” as inhibiting basic drives like aggression and sexuality. - *Piaget’s Integration Model*: Argued that a healthy personality does not merely suppress lower drives; instead, it weaves them into higher-order goals (e.g., using aggression in sports or healthy competition). - **Social and Temporal Context**: Proper integration involves broadening one’s scope in time (considering future consequences) and space (recognizing other people’s needs), rather than simply stifling a raw impulse. ### 3. Hypothalamic Circuits: The Core Motivational Engine - **Location & Function**: The hypothalamus is small but crucial. It houses multiple *switches* that, when activated, trigger distinct motivational or emotional states (e.g., rage, copulation, thirst). - **Context Sensitivity**: These states are not purely reflexive; they also alter how the world is *perceived*. For instance, when “rage circuitry” is active, almost any novel object or being can be interpreted as a threat or a target. - **Sophistication of ‘Lower’ Structures**: Even though the hypothalamus is evolutionarily old, it can coordinate surprisingly complex sequences of behavior-almost like a “mini-identity” within us. ### 4. Prefrontal Cortex: Orchestrating the Broader View - **Context-Dependent Control**: The prefrontal cortex provides the ability to *strategize* based on context, linking immediate desires to long-term goals or social rules. - **Temporal Expansion**: It enables individuals to project forward in time (“If I do this now, what happens tomorrow?”) and to account for social ramifications (“Will this help or harm my relationships?”). - **In Maturation**: Across early childhood (especially the first 25 years), the prefrontal cortex increasingly helps regulate or *integrate* the hypothalamic drives, shifting a child’s behavior from impulsive to socially adaptable. ### 5. The Need for a “Rule Book” - **Why Rules Matter**: As Andrew Huberman notes, human neural circuitry alone seems insufficient to guide behavior optimally; we require collective wisdom-cultural, ethical, or religious rules-to harness and direct our subpersonalities. - **Socialization Window**: This cultural “rule book” (passed on through family, peers, institutions) is essential during the critical period of childhood and adolescence, ensuring that no single hypothalamic drive becomes a “tyrant.” ### 6. Subpersonalities in Action: Rage, Addiction, and Psychopathy - **Rage and Violence**: Cases like extreme violence or historical warrior cultures (e.g., Vikings) illustrate how an entire personality can be *organized* around hypothalamic rage, sometimes deliberately (to increase fearlessness in battle). - **Addiction**: Repeated substance use reinforces dopaminergic circuits in the brain, essentially “growing” a powerful subpersonality that rationalizes and pursues drug use above all else. This subpersonality can hijack or silence the long-term, prefrontal “voice.” - **Psychopathy**: Psychopaths often exhibit stunted integration, favoring immediate gratification while ignoring future consequences or communal needs. This immaturity manifests as an inability to learn from negative outcomes. ### 7. Childhood Socialization: From Toddler to Teen - **Two-Year-Olds and Aggression**: Research indicates two-year-olds can be surprisingly aggressive (biting, kicking, hitting), with a small subset (mostly boys) at risk of retaining these behaviors if socialization fails. - **Time-Out as Integration**: A well-handled time-out is not just *inhibiting* a child but teaching the child to bring reflexive behavior under voluntary, socially conscious control. The ultimate goal is integrated, future-oriented conduct, not merely blind obedience. ### 8. Religious Symbolism and Human Drives - **From Polytheism to Monotheism**: Historically, polytheistic gods represent discrete motivational drives. Monotheism can be viewed as an evolutionary step in creating *one* overarching moral structure that integrates all drives. - **Spiritualization of Drives**: Personifying drives as “deities” underscores their awesome power: if not channeled properly, an individual can be “possessed” by anger, lust, or other forces. Religion often warns us to be mindful of these “lesser gods.” --- ## Conclusion In their discussion, Andrew Huberman and Jordan Peterson stress that our basic drives-rooted in the hypothalamus-form a variety of “subpersonalities” rather than mere impulses to be shut down. The crucial developmental task is to *integrate* these subpersonalities into a cohesive structure, aided by the prefrontal cortex’s capacity for future-oriented, contextual thinking. True maturity emerges when we neither suppress these drives wholesale nor let them run rampant but orchestrate them in alignment with long-term goals and communal values. This integrated framework not only aids individual well-being but also highlights the importance of societal and cultural “rule books,” such as moral codes or religious principles, which guide us toward a balanced life in tune with both personal fulfillment and social harmony.

This is so interesting. I have been a professional dancer and Pilates instructor for over 40 years. In terms of jumping, I am curious because the jumping and bouncing that I have done has been in a controlled fashion, as opposed to the way you would jump rope. If the jumping and bouncing is in a controlled manner, does it make any difference on these other aspects that you were referring to in respect to the brain. Of course, I have no way of knowing the size of my hypothalamus or the condition of my blood, brain barrier, etc. I do know that my bones are very dense. In my 50s when I had lumbar surgeries, the doctors had a very difficult time getting the rods into my dense bones. I guess I can take that as a good sign?? The other question would be regarding your title depicting 30/40 years old. Is that to say if you were past your 40s and you do this type of intense exercise that it does not have the same positive effects? Hey… I turn 66 tomorrow. I can still rock it like nobody’s business. And partially thanks to you, your work has helped me tremendously over the past couple years. ❤

I agree but no so called mental health professional will help. The whole system needs such dynamics or else they ‘d be out of work. Ask a shrink how long she is practicing and then ask her how many patients she has healed…i bet the latter is zero.😂😂😂😂

Mastering the mind is the key to mastering life. Your thoughts are the seeds of your reality-tend to them wisely. When chaos stirs within, remember: you are not your thoughts; you are the observer. With focus and discipline, even the wildest storm can become a calm, steady breeze. Control your mind, and you’ll control your destiny.

Fear loves chaos, so give it structure. Light a candle, play a song, sip some tea-whatever signals your brain it’s time to create. Rituals are like a 'go' button for your imagination.

I thought maybe something would change but my mother and sister with her low IQ husband just took his place and every time they open their smelly mouths they lie. No self control, no questioning themselves. They‘ll just end up as my dad sick and miserable, my mom already is a trainwreck. I downloaded this video as it is soooo spot on. 😂

Dear Dr Huberman, great talk and advice! Most of us do not appreciate how much power and influence we have on ourselves. I believe and realized that the best way to be influential is to influence ourselves. It all starts with what we're thinking. How is our thinking elevating us? When you add words and emotions, that adds fuel to the fire. What fuel are you adding to the fire? Thank you for sharing this information 🙏
