Yea too many corners, traffic lights and vehicles. Probably only place you can do a FTP test is Akuna Bay or Centennial Park

For me, indoor cycling was the beginning of it for me (as an adult). In 2022, my husband and I were in bad shape. Both obese (me on a technicality based on my height, I'm a shorty, but I was definitely overweight). So, my husband wanted to get an exercise bike to work on his fitness. We needed something that was heavy-duty to cope with his weight and yet functional for my short height. The only one that we could find was a Peloton bike at that time. So, we got that and I really enjoyed that and my fitness changed a lot. In 2023, I thought "You know what? I reckon I might be fit enough to ride to work now..." I worked 3.5kms from home. It seemed like a mammoth task at the time but I wanted to be more environmentally conscious. It was also easier to park as there was a bike storage room in the building, rather than parking a kilometre from the building. Riding there was do-able, albeit terrifying, but the 49m gain back was too much for me (things have changed). So, I bought an e-bike. By August 2023, I was doing this commute with ease and quicker than it would have been by car (with an e-bike). In late-2023, we unexpectedly needed to move to 32.1kms away without what I would deem a safe route through. I started catching the train down to two stops before, at 3kms away and a 12m gain. Then 4 stops away, 10kms away, 35m gain and 249m descent. Then riding from the nearest stop to my house where I felt I could safely ride from, at 20kms, 36m gain, 381m descent. By mid-2024, I started riding back up to the four stops away as well (bugger 381m gain after a full day of work with all of my work gear!). And then in late-2024, my work moved. Twice. Currently, it's not work riding to work (the train literally goes straight to the building), but I do bike commute to the shops, etc. When working from home, I also go for a morning ride before work, usually around 10kms and with around 300m gain, give or take, depending on the route. It all started with an exercise bike (and now, I'd much rather get out on the trails!)

Looking to get started with cycling and stumbled across your video! Then ended up having a massive laugh because your journey is basically two thirds of what I'm looking at for a commute! (Artarmon to Kensington) Certain parts of North Sydney / Pac Highway really intimidate me though - any advice on this? Once in the CBD the cycleways are pretty good all the way to Kensington :)

hey josh! i always love your videos on all things cycling, especially these ones on the shimanami kaido! long question re: route planning ahead: my bf and i are planning to do the SK in a couple months and was wondering if you have any suggestions on the route. we usually do 50-80km road rides on the weekends, and been training for a 124km ride next week; although we will rent e-bikes from WAKKA. for reference: climbed 1000m across 60km and averaged about 20km/hr. do you reckon it would be quite rushed to ride the most direct route from onomichi to imabari then ride back to WAKKA on day 1 (? 110km) then ride the scenic route back to onomichi on day 2 (60km). do u reckon it’s worth bringing our bibs for the ride? thanks in advance!!
@joshkwan
@joshkwan 4 күн бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and also post your question. While entirely physically possible for to do the entire route and back to WAKKA in one day, I probably wouldn’t recommend it. When riding a route like this it’s nice to remove the time pressure and also give yourself some breathing room to do sightseeing. Instead perhaps it would be nicer to do a round trip of one of the islands. RE bibs; yep I think that would be a good idea. I brought mine, didn’t use it and kinda regretted it. Cargo bibs with pockets would be super handy!

@@joshkwan thanks for your thoughtful response josh. duly noted! ok follow up question then- did you find the bus from imabari back to fukuyama to come often enough that you weren’t worried it would just completely not show up..? from what i saw online it looked like it only left imabari station like 3 times a day.. 🤔 cuz the bus time table is a big reason for thinking of doing such a rushed trip. otherwise i’ll probs do the scenic route you did for both legs.
@joshkwan
@joshkwan 3 күн бұрын
@@lindorphins Yep the bus seems to be every few hours. Note that you have to pre-purchase your ticket from the counter at the bus stop. Theres a few other bus options too, for example theres one which goes from Imabari to Tokyo overnight (its like a 7 hour trip). For us we got lucky and we arrived at Imabari in time for the ~4pm bus. All the best!

You're suppose to put the liquid wax on hours before (if not the day prior) you ride so that it has time to harden and sticks to the chain. You don't use it like an oil lube.

Weird pace line. Normally the pace is set on the left line and after your turn you go to the right line and drift to the back of the line. Your method means the right line is constantly accelerating to get to the front
@trevs9015
@trevs9015 7 күн бұрын
Depending where you are from? we drive on the left, overtaking is on the right so it's normal practice for the faster line to be on the right. (If in a race it will depend on which direction any wind is coming from). A good pace line ( ie:through & off) the fast line shouldn't need to accelerate past the slower line as you ease off the power as you peel off, hence the term through & off. If not you end up with a pace line racing itself and a shambles. You can see in the video at times the line is racing itself as the rider peeling off stays on the power leaving the fast line having to accelerate to catch and pass.
@cannon1156
@cannon1156 7 күн бұрын
@@trevs9015 .. I am from Sydney. Most pace lines I have been in have the set pace on the left and dropping off to the right. I suppose it doesnt matter if it is in reverse but this pace line in the video is all wrong. The fast line has to accelerate to pass the other line. It is all about holding a set pace not accelerating to get past the line
@trevs9015
@trevs9015 7 күн бұрын
@@cannon1156 ahh interesting, I too am Sydney (sorry I thought you may have been from O/S) but I've never done a pace line with the fastline on the left (except in some races). Maybe just different group etiquettes I guess. Your right I agree the fast line is having to accelerate to roll through which they shouldn't need too.
@joshkwan
@joshkwan 7 күн бұрын
Love the discussion guys. Best practise for paceline is to roll in whatever direction the wind dictates. With that being said though, since we’re on a circuit that’s not really possible. I’ve ridden in Sydney for a few years with plenty of groups and I’ve never been with one which rotates clockwise though. In terms of the footage you’re seeing, fully get that it’s not the most efficient paceline. But the ride is almost like a ‘race’ style drop ride. And you’ll see it often just divulges to single file.

Great Vid. Clearly, the Emonda is the preferred bike over the Madone. I really think Trek made the wrong move dropping it from their line-up. For me the Emonda is better all-round bike. While the Madone is perhaps more aero in configuration it’s still heavier. I bet when it comes to doing 3 Peaks the Emonda will be the go to choice, as it’s lighter and with over 4,000 metres of vert it will prove faster. Great work out there. You were really fanging it around that circuit. Great metrics too.
