This is the 3rd video of your marine device, and i still have no idea what it is. What does the tower do? How is it propelled? A few clips of it, from a distance, would be helpful.. It looks like something u designed and built yourself, yes? Better video editing, and sequencing, would b in order here, but i am intrigued

Reefing looks like it would be an issue. When I added reef points to my Hobie 16 sailplan on a small trimaran, full sail was managed by a halyard lock, but the reef points did not have that ability.

That's a cool design. Sailing with the wind off the starboard beam seems to raise the main hull into a planing position. How does she go with the wind coming in from the port side?

Works very good. Makes it easy to keep good luff and Leach tension in the sail. Quite tricky to get it to catch, but easy to release it, and that is the important thing.

@@timothyrussell2409 I have had several similar requests so perhaps I should make some effort in that direction. I have a build diary and a few hundred photos of the build so it would be possible to put it into a book form. Not plans as such but just a record of how I built the boat. Don't hold your breath but yes I will get around to it one day.

Very smart way to step the rig. However, how do you then get the boom onto it?
@ianaitken1136
@ianaitken1136 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, the boom is made of carbon tubes and is in 3 parts. Each part weighs about 8 kg so is easily manageable to assemble and disassemble. It plugs into a tabernacle device to raise it as a crane jib. Then after the mast is plugged in it is lowered and taken apart to be positioned on the mast.

Do you have any diagrams of your tiller to rudder link? I would be interested to see them if they exist.
@ianaitken1136
@ianaitken1136 5 жыл бұрын
No sorry, the linkage is just a stainless tube with marine grade rod ends. I sorted out the geometry on a model before making the full size parts. When I am sailing next summer I will video a shunt and show how the rudders flip around 180 degrees and how the tillers are used.

The bracket fixed to the masthead won't succumb to fatigue or loosen over time?
@ianaitken1136
@ianaitken1136 5 жыл бұрын
I think it will be strong enough. It is 2mm thick 316 stainless and most of the stress is in plain tension. But time will tell. It is very easy to design something that will never fail, just make it many times stronger than needed. Trouble is that also makes it many times heavier than needed. High performance multihull boats should be designed to be just strong enough, then only one more thing should be added, (more lightness!)

Hi Mr. Aitken, my hat's off to you for your ingenious suite of design features used to facilitate a strategy that would fit right in with a "trailer sailor's" wish list. Folding ama and bridgedeck, integral rig for stepping the wingsail and all. Genius! And a HarryProa to boot! I can see myself weekend sailing the Great Lakes one season and then traveling to the far flung Florida Keys the next trailered via the Interstate. Your brilliant design ticked all the checkboxes for me. Will we see a build blog someday or be able purchase build plans perhaps?

Hello Robert, Please call me Ian, in New Zealand we don't do formalities, even if a Kiwi bumped into the prime minister on the street we would just address him/her by their christian name. Sorry no chance of me producing build plans. I am a retired mechanic/farmer/engineer and built Jacknife as one of the projects on my bucket list. I have extensive notes, calcs, build diaries and photos that I may put together in electronic form sometime in the future. A competent builder should be able to follow them. Have you checked out the specs on the Harryproa site. Just search Ian Aitken.
