@SSOP 5.)The situation after breaking with the 3ball: Sorry, cannot say why the cb landed near the bottom rail because the breakshot is only to see in time lapse. Normal speed or slow motion would be better for studieing the shot.

I like this one Bob, it's good to diagnose where you go wrong and why, especially when you are not in the moment trying to keep the run alive. I saw several places where a different choice a bit earlier in the rack would likely have been better, but that type of call is likely picking with hindsight.

@SSOP Many thanks for the quick answers Bob. Yes, I know, you had played 100+ many times. You can reach the 200 too but you cannot force it. Without the skills and knowledge you have in straight pool, the concentration over a longer time (60 - 90 minutes) will be crucial for success.

While you and others may have developed your alignment around your rear foot, I believe there is too much emphasis given to the exact position of the rear foot. Much more is stability which comes from proper balance between the 2 feet and the bridge hand. You don’t mention body clearance for stroke followthrough in this particular video and that is extremely important. I never think about my feet position, but it’s true that my rear foot ends up along the same line.

First rack in the vid. I think it is the shot, but with a tighter goal. Not just run into the balls and hope for some luck, but plan to come into half of the 10 on the right side. it's the same level of thought you would give it if you were following straight into it, the only difference is that you're coming off a rail at it.

We are LITERALLY using a wireless mic throughout the video! Doh. The problem was we were passing it back and forth and not holding it close enough to our mouths. Until later in the video where John clipped it to his shirt. This is literally the only video out of hundreds I have posted where I did this. I have experimented for hours with many microphones to arrive at a good quality Shure mic for wired situations and the DJI wireless mic you hear in this video when I'm at the table playing.

Whenever it's possible I avoid to have an inside angle on my bb. I myself prefer a little bit thinner hit on the bb, half full hit or a little bit less. So it's not available to shoot the bb hard, so I have more control over the bb and in many cases the rack goes completely open. Another tip is: Practice bb, practice bb, practice bb.... you will see: It's a good way to increase your results in this difficult game 14.1 endless!

I do tip left at backswing and then cut across to tip right, pulling my elbow in at contact, a reverse chicken wing. I am right handed but super left eye dominant. Using a mirror and video shot straight back to my face, i find that, in order to line up the way you say and have my left eye over the stick looking straight down the shot line, i need to have the big toe tip of my right/anchor foot just to the inside of the shot line and my left/forward foot big toe completely on the shot line, a straight or even a bit inward standing stance. This feels alien to the extreme and goes against everything i have been taught or seen anywhere. But, now my shoulder, elbow, stick and eye seem to be completely vertically aligned. I need to try this out on real shots.
@ShortstopOnPool
@ShortstopOnPool 7 күн бұрын
I think I know what you mean. The feet position you describe helps you rotate your shoulders farther. But the balance is not as good because the tripod is so narrow. You could try stepping forward farther with your forward foot, rather than bringing it up to the shot line. Good luck!

A variation of this drill is my go-to as you can learn so much from it, sinking the ball or not, by paying attention to the cue ball, for one. You have better concentration and stamina than I do, by the 3rd rack into the 4th, my shots go all ugly. Time to stop and do something else. I am "happy" to see some missed balls there, and drifted cue balls, as it makes my meager results seem a bit less meager. 😊
@ShortstopOnPool
@ShortstopOnPool 8 күн бұрын
Yes. The results (number of pocketed shots) is not the only metric that should be tracked. As you pointed out, if the ball goes in but the cue ball drifts, thats an indication of a slight stroke delivery error that will turn into a miss later. Believe me - I feel the fatigue about the 4th rack. I like this drill as it can simulate the fatigue (physical and mental) that one can feel playing in a tournament or money match.

Excellent video! You described the issue with my stroke perfectly...i recognized my arm pronating inwards and throwing off my shot, so I began using a certain amount of supination to straighten it out. This, of course, fails apart when you have to shoot at different speeds. Getting the perfect balance of each is impossible for all the different types of speeds and stroke lengths used. Unfortunately, I've been doing this for so long that a natural arm movement feels "wrong" and when I look at mirror or video images of my stance and alignment my elbow is more in with my inner shoulder blade as opposed to my shoulder due to supination being in the muscle memory of my stroke. However, I am absolutely determined not to give in and go back to a bad stroke but keep at it until new muscle memory is developed and natural straight alignment is my default position!
@ShortstopOnPool
@ShortstopOnPool 9 күн бұрын
It takes less time than you think. The key is to proceed carefully and slowly, making sure the alignment is right. Before long it will be the "New Normal". Good luck!

It looks like you are consistently stepping in to your shooting stance with the right shoulder a little high, then it lowers into place as you do your warmups. Do you see that as well? I don't see it as a big problem, unless you 'get in the groove' and speed up enough to not allow for the full settle time.

Having gone to the National Billiards Academy's clinic, I'm trying to incorporate their 'pause' step between my backstroke and accelerating through the ball with thestroke. Much more difficult than I thought it would be to make a habit, but I'm getting there and like the consistency off it. A question about your pre-shot routine. I've been taught to 'aim with your feet' by standing on the shot line (as you imagine it extending back towards you) with your right foot (assuming you shoot right-handed). I think around 00:06:42, your right foot kind of goes back as you get in position rather than stepping forward with your left leg into the shot. Can you speak on your technique when getting down to shooting position?
@ShortstopOnPool
@ShortstopOnPool 11 күн бұрын
Because I am 6'-5" tall I used to push my rear foot back a bit to get lower. I don't do that anymore (as much). About that "pause". I teach a pause before your final backstroke, and then pause or freeze at the end of your follow-through. IMO, the pendulum motion should flow smoothly. A very slow backstroke motion. Then let the cue stick fall naturally as you accelerate it smoothly. I believe pausing with your grip hand up at the top of the backstroke is not good.

@@ShortstopOnPool Thanks for the response. I actually watched your video 'Proper Pool Stance for Tall Players', and I noticed in that one that you covered the foot dropping back a bit in the three-step approach (you presently use a two-step approach, which I was experimenting with in practice today). That video has also been very insightful for me!
@ShortstopOnPool
@ShortstopOnPool 10 күн бұрын
@@joshbenjamin1100 I've even experimented with a one-step approach. Eklent Kaci (same height as me) does this. Its weird because you place your rear foot inside the shot line and have to turn your torso and/or lean over a bit to have your head on the line before stepping in. But I think simplicity is best. The fewer steps means fewer things to go wrong.
