All you have to do is deal with Mellanox X3-X6 cards in a data center to know how flaky the drivers can be across distros. I can’t count how many times I had to manually download drivers, Tar, run the script, and then stop and restart network service, or even ifup and ifdown the device several times, in order for these things to work.

With modern shells such as Zsh, this is a lot easier. You can configure it to use the vi mode and there are options for convenient multi-line usage. With plug-ins, the possibilities are endless. Though, being able to use the editor directly is a good approach. Nice tip.

Great video. Additionally, you can run the last command using !-1 and using !$ allows you to reuse the last argument from the previous command.
@RayChavez2 ай бұрын
I believe it’s !! not !-1 for the last command 🤔
@MohammadLsk2 ай бұрын
@@RayChavez Yes. The '!!' command is used to run the last command, but you can also use negative numbers to run previous commands. For example, '!-1' runs the last command and '!-2' runs the second to last command.
@RayChavez2 ай бұрын
Are you sure it’s not “!1” instead of “!-1”? In either case, thank you! I’ll give the negative numbers a try 👌🏼

i usually open another terminal tab, then switch between tabs, i think the buffers would be better
@RayChavez2 ай бұрын
99% of the time, I use the Buffer List too. I’ll split the window if I’m editing a new version of a config file and need to see the old one at the same time. A REALLY GOOD use case for vim windows is when you’re running a vimdiff on files 👌🏼

I like to point out rather than use nano; try out micro text editor. Micro has nicer more familiar keybinds; though it is a bit larger but makes like easier. Honestly, I have a tough time getting use to Vim or Emacs, the key binds don't work for me.

I personally have zero interest in channels with music. Especially the awful whorehouse elevator music you chose to inflict on us. Please save yourself time and effort - skip the music. What is your video about... I have no idea, because I was too busy hating the awful music. Welcome to my 'Dont recommend channel' list. And do have a nice day.

What do you mean by “add username and host”? Is that just my email? At 0:33
@RayChavez6 ай бұрын
I’m describing the syntax as I type it. “Username” = user1 “At” = @ “Host” = remote1 Host is short for hostname, and is the name of the remote server (DNS). === But yes, an email address has identical syntax. Great question!!! 🙋🏻♂️

I believe /dev/fd/63 is a pipe rather than a temp file, but I'd have to go double-check. Still, probably less confusing in a one-minute intro to just call it a temp file. I've used this technique to redirect varnish logs to /bin/logger, so I could slice-and-dice them using rsyslog. Super cool.
@hotfix_cowboy7 ай бұрын
What is an example of when you prefer using one vs the other? Thanks!
@RayChavez7 ай бұрын
As demonstrated in the video, and *in general*, when you want the output directly placed on the command line, use command substitution. If you need the output placed into a file first, THEN reference that file, use process substitution. If you want a more "advanced example", see my video "How to Read Git Diff Output", timestamp 3 minutes, and 23 seconds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYi2kHiKnNV_fLMsi=48c74V_qjRdEqLHD&t=203 Great question btw! 🫡

commit in git is full snapshot or just changes what they remember at that time??
@RayChavez Жыл бұрын
Just the changes. === I think of a commit as a "patch". Git only stores what *changes* were applied in each commit. Git presents these changes to you as "diff hunks" when you ask for it via git-show, git-log, etc. === They explain it better than I ever could, lol: git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-What-is-Git%3F === Great question btw, I had to stop and actually think about it. LOL!
