MO lore: Cahokia. Cahokia City is the greatest set of ruins created by the influential Mississippian culture in the Mississippi River Valley. We don’t know much about the Mississippians since they didn’t leave behind any writing, but their archaeological sites suggest a complex and sophisticated culture. They’re known for building large mounds for important buildings and burial sites, and Cahokia City is the biggest of these. Cahokia is thought to have been much larger than its current archaeological sites suggest. Nearby St. Louis used to be known as the “Mound City” because they recorded up to 27 Cahokia related mounds in city grounds. Unfortunately, most mounds were bulldozed to clear space for urbanization and the 1904 World’s Fair. The only remaining one is the “Sugar Loaf Mound” because it was on private property, which the Osage Nation bought in 2009.
