This is the only time you would see Baker smile - when immersed in pure jazz. More than just a spectacular polyrhythmic virtuoso, Baker could swing. And be as delicate as any jazz drummer.

The piano-bass-flute section near the last always gives me goosebumps, especially while think that it was two months before Eric Dolphy's death.

Given Duke's prolific output over his career as a leader, it's easy to forget that he was a very talented pianist.

Explain please. Just discovered Eric and his music, and have been fascinated by his journey
@AbyControl Жыл бұрын
@@channel44online from Wikipedia it says he collapsed on stage in Berlin from diabetic shock but the hospital thought since he was black and a jazz musician he was a junkie on drugs but the man never did drugs. All they had to do was give him a blood test find out he was diabetic and treat him accordingly but they left him to “let the drugs run their course” even though there were no drugs so he died due to stereotypes

I have a 1964 live album of Mingus playing with Eric Dolphy. Is this available in a studio version? It looks like they are in a recording studio here.
@swineminus4 жыл бұрын
this is a studio in Liege, Belgium. 4-16-64? recorded for radio broadcast, which occurred a few days later, I believe.

O MY God this just has to be one of the most brilliant collaborations ever, they all shine but Dolphy is the jewel in the jazz crown along with Mingus (blindingly amazing when he drops objects into the open piano strings & his bowed work).

A lot of garbage in these comments. That head of steam at 37 minutes shows you something; Ginger wasn't a conventional jazz drummer. But there was never a jazz drummer who could rip with power like that except maybe Tony Williams. He was his own man. Too bad for many he wasn't somebody else. He was incapable of being anybody else. God bless that man.

First time listening to Eric Dolphy, didn't know what to expect so I jumped out of my seat at 1:40 . That was cool, but very jarring.
