Great video! Just as a note (and I know this video is 5 years old): Epic Comics was already releasing AKIRA in English two months BEFORE the animated film was released in Japan. Most western manga fans of the time didn't even know about it until it was announced for a U.S. release in late '89. I had just purchased issue 15 or 16 when it was announced for an English release by Streamline Pictures.

I must point out that "Neo-Tokyo" was not the name given to the film by Otomo. It was given that title by the company that localized it for American distribution, as they were no doubt trying to cash in on the popularity of Akira. The actual title of the film is "Labyrinth Tales" ....but is also titled "Manie-Manie" for reasons I have yet to discover. Both are acceptable titles but its true title is Labyrinth Tales and not Neo-Tokyo. Just thought you should know. Love the video so far.

Great and informative video. BTW 'Neo Tokyo's original Japanese title was 'Labyrinth Stories Manie Manie'.It was retitled by Streamline Pictures for limited theatrical release.

Rather Cool, congrats. Next year is 2019, when most of AKIRA takes place. I'm gladly surprised you looked up his High School (Sanuma HS in Hasama-town since 2005 part of Tome city); it is "in the sticks" AND as you note has produced quite an outsized number of creatives/artists. BTW, Some source scenes in this video have been switched left-right; one can tell by the side the cars drive, written signs, etc. As others have said, this video of yours deserves more views!

Excellent video. I appreciate the work and research that went into this. I do hope that Otomo will write (especially DRAW) another full length Manga before calling it quits. I do think he has the ability to surpass his Masterpiece, Akira but it would be a matter of interest on the part of the creator. Take a look at the great Masume Shirow. The creator of Ghost in The Shell could easily be involved in something new but he just doesn't have the interest anymore. Does it have something to do with the passion of Youth?
@larrylovehandle84727 жыл бұрын
wrestledeep no more like fear of tarnishing their reputation and addiction to an easy life of riches and adulation. Look at Miyazaki. He can't quit because he has the heart of a champion. Someone should light a fire under otomos fat lazy ass.
@wrestledeep7 жыл бұрын
You are right, my friend. Miyazaki is cut from a different cloth. The goal of most modern Commercial artists is to create their "Magnum Opus" and then live off the glory and fame of that. Miyazaki keeps going and going... Even his so-called mentor and competitor, Isao Takahata fell behind long ago because of his slow, meandering creative process. Let us hope Otomo blesses us one last time with a Manga Masterpiece :)

Why did you choose Tintin as an example for European comics and not something from Moebius?
@madrix56677 жыл бұрын
Probably because it was much more influential than Moebius, and much more widespread through the world

@madrix56677 жыл бұрын
Ryuma King Tintin has a steven spielberg movie, sorry to disappoint you, but tintin is much more widespread and known around the world. It's not because Moebius was better that it makes him more widespread and known, tintin was just much more known. I also assume youre american, that would explain why youd think that way. No need to be rude about it either, swearing doesnt make your point more valid.
@yanshero427 жыл бұрын
Yeah but Moebius has been a major influence for Otomo, so it doesn't make any sense to use Tintin as an example
