Schickele also composed the arrangements for a couple of Joan Baez albums back in the day for Vanguard. "Noel" and "Baptism." All of those arrangements are quite original and some of them are very good, indeed.

Great interview. Always been a fan of Peter Schickele, P.D.Q. Bach and Maestro Slatkin. The maestro may remember me for a couple of times I told him I know Stuart Pearl (Violinist At That Time) who he did a concert with way back in his early school days out in California. Looking good maestro at age eighty. I'm right behind you at age 76. Wish I looked that good.

Wonderful to see the Maestro in such good form. He's been one of my favorites since I was 16, and observed him rehearsing with the Boston Unversity Tanglewood Orchestra (high school), in which he treated them with such respect, and also tried to give them as much practical know-how for the future as was possible. In Scheherezade, he showed different ways they might encounter it conducted -- and all having been a bit rushed -- they didn't even have a score for him but he had the rehearsal letters memorized! Happy Birthday! (BTW I live right near Tanglewood)

Yeah, I have done a few of these with him in the past and he's always a good interview subject. He remains a big favorite with local audiences and, of course, he lives here now. :-)

The older generation artists had no clue about Auto-Tune or electronic pitch correction. It's a shame that so many of the younger generation has depended upon these electronics. The electronics can make someone sound so perfect, they don't sound HUMAN. I very much appreciate singer/performers like John Lloyd Young who actually can sing LIVE. I will be seeing Young in Irvine CA in the next year, and appreciate that he is touring on the West Coast

The tape of the song Working My Way Back To You has the music and lyrics credited to the Spinners. That is incorrect. The writers are Rendell and Linzer. That being said, his work in the play was phenomenal. I attended a cast party with him and he was very nice. Problem with him is his left-wing politics and his hateful talk about Trump.

@@francisruggiero8361 I never mentioned the song credits on the video selection which, in any case, I did not create.. And you're the one who brought up Young's politics and said they were a "problem" (your own words, sport). Methinks you protest (or maybe just project) too much. 🙂

This song is the first recorded appearance of the ugly racist slur: "jigaboo." (according to OED.) The word had probably been in common racist usage for most of the previous century. But this hit song in a hit Broadway musical was the first time it appeared in PRINT (as far as scholars know.) Its appearance in this song is seamlessly embedded within the whole racist and colonialist message of this song: In the song: An Irish man (long considered the bottom of the English social system) is cast away on an island. The natives make him king (since presumably, even the lowest white man is naturally king material among dark skinned people, a la Tarzan). Thrilled and excited at being a king among dark peoples, the Irish castaway-turned-Nabob invites his "little Irish Rose" to join him and become queen over the island's people. "My little Irish Rose So, come to your Nabob And next Patrick's Day Be Mistress Mumbo Jumbo Jigaboo J. O'Shea." J*gaboo is (like the N-word) one of the ugliest slurs in American racist language. And this was embedded in a song that was the hit within a hit broadway musical in 1909 (at the raging height of Jim Crow and lynch law). The crude white supremacy (which is celebrated here in a exuberantly comedic and shameless way) is typical for this era (of blackface and minstrel shows). And when people "revive" this broadway hit today (a century later) it is revealing what they choose to do with it. Expose it? Explain it? Or pretend everything is fine, perfect, nostalgic? Maurice Scott chose (consciously, I assume) to white wash this song and its racist slur (while joyfully embracing its larger white superiority message.) He replaces the ugly slur "jigabo" with a mumbled nonsense word "jijibob." This is one way that overt white racism (which in the decade surrounding 1909 was in the midst of a truly murderous wave of lynching) is covered up. And even celebrated. Note: My post here (and any factual exposure of such things) is probably illegal in now Florida schools -- since CRT is forbidden by law!
