Thurm was the 1970 A.L. Rookie of the Year for the Yankees and could call a game like few catchers. Pitchers loved him because he knew best when to call for a fastball, a curve, a change up, a slider, etc. And where exactly the pitcher should throw the pitch, low, high, down the middle, on the corners. The serious injury Thurm suffered to his throwing hand in 1974 sent him on the disable list for about half the season and I think he needed hand surgery in 1975 that kept him out of baseball entirely that year. But in 1976 he roared back to the majors, winning the A.L. MVP award. He was known as being a throw-back, meaning his style of playing ball reminded people of the bygone days when ballplayers were ballplayers and had guts and did not slack on the field. And when he died, in the very next home game at Yankee Stadium with a packed crowd, there was not a dry eye in the house. When you have an entire stadium with every single person int here crying for you, it means you were greatly respected and beloved. How many people does that happen to when they die? I saw this man play baseball from 1973 to 1979 when I began going to games. I saw him firsthand. I know what I saw.

Been a Yankees fan since 1956. I was 5 and we lived in New Jersey and our family went to a Yankees game at the Stadium. They played the Red Sox and I got to see Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. The reason I can recall them playing was my Dad was just going on and on about them both. A few years later it registered in me. After that I would keep up with Mickey’s average daily after I saw the boxscore in the paper. That is how involved I was with Mick’s career. He was absolute favorite pinstripes until Thurman arrived. I loved the way he played. No flair, just results. Thurman epitomized team and he was an obvious leader of those Yankee teams. My sadness at the tragedy of his premature passing is heartfelt to this day. A part of me still grieves over his tragic loss to this day. RIP Captain.

Allen was a MVP, Rookie of year and a 7 time all star as well as Munson. Allen hit a two-run home run off the Cubs' Larry Jackson on May 29, 1965 that cleared the Coke sign on Connie Mack Stadium's left-center field roof. That home run, an estimated 529-footer, inspired Willie Stargell to say: "Now I know why they (the Phillies fans) boo Richie all the time."

Thurman was always the player I looked up to growing up. Not Fisk or Bench. Thurman played with a toughness and dedication more so than those other 2. He played hurt and never outwardly complained about the ache and pains. All he wanted to do was to play Catcher for the Yankees and be a great family man. He got to live that dream. I played catcher for over 30 years and have the scars to prove it, but I tried to live my life like he did. The only thing I have to wish for is that Mrs Munson gets a call from Cooperstown. He deserves to be enshrined. RIP 15.

I’m not sure Thurman deserves it, but I say that because he didn’t play long enough. I understand that death was out of his control but brevity, no matter how it occurs, is something the writers look at. They overlooked it with Koufax because he wasn’t just great for a short time, he was otherworldly. However a case for Munson can be made. I will say this: in the time Munson and Fisk played against each other, from 72-79, Munson was the better catcher. In baseball in the 70s only Bench was better than Thurman. And Bench was the best ever.

That event defines the abrupt end to his career at the age of 32 and probably would not be having this discussion without it. I hate to do this, because Thurman Munson was my favorite player growing up. I simply do not see Munson as a hall of famer. An excellent player, yes, but a hall of famer, no. Thurman has a .292 lifetime average and a respectable .346 OBP. He had three great years between 1975 and 1976 in which he was the only player in MLB to bat over .300 and drive in over 100 runs. He was an excellent defensive catcher who won three gold gloves (and had it not been for Jim Sundberg, he may have won one or two more) and I think he had a reputation for calling a good game. However, even making allowances for the fact that he was a catcher and offense was harder to come by in the seventies, I just don't think he gets into the hall of fame range. Other than 1975-'77, he never even drove in 80, much less ninety runs in a season. He rarely challenged for the league lead in statistics like on base percentage or slugging percentage. The only other season in his career that compared to his 1975-1977 seasons was 1973 when he hit .301 with 20 HR, 74 RBI and 80 Runs (it can be argued in relative terms that he was as good that season as he was in the big three seasons of his career). I hate to say it, but this is not a career comparable to Cochrane, Hartnett, Dickey, Berra, Campanella, Bench, Carter. I know that these seven are the elites and don't necessarily set the standard for the hall of fame, but I think guys who are not in that circle of quality should be a little closer than Munson was. Like I said, it pains me to say this, but I have to respectfully disagree with induction for Thurman Munson, a great player who is a little short.

@chrisverby3047
@chrisverby3047 Жыл бұрын
@@frankjuarez1367 Because the hall of Fame has made many, many mistakes, including Simmons, that does not mean that the standard should be lowered based on those mistakes. The goal should be to never make those mistakes again. Unfortunately, players like Harold Baines and Simmons (and others-George Kell, Jim Bottomly, Fred Lindstrom) still get elected. The voters should take a good hard look at that and put the effort into voting to insure it does not happen again. This could include voters taking a pass on casting a vote if it is a poor group of candidates. And to be clear, I don't think the standard should be Mays or Aaron. They don't need a HOF to confirm their greatness. The standard for a hall of famer is much lower, but it should still be a demonstrably great player. Munson just fell a couple of good seasons short. If Dick Allen is a border liner (and I think he is), then I could not support Munson for induction. Instead, I have good memories of a terrific player.
