I can smell the mold growing already without a moisture barrier. Hopefully he spent all the extra money on real wood lap siding just to run it the wrong way then have to caulk and paint every seam

Depending on the environment and how well its sealed it may not even need a moisture barrier. Just saying.

Not sure I get it. You sanded down the sides of the box but then it showed the pins with the Rubio Monaco black. Did you paint them on or did I miss something? Or did they simply darken with the clear Rubio monocot that you did the sides with? Love your video. I’m now a subscriber.

How come you don’t use push blocks for the planner? I just saw another woodworker on KZbin who lost his fingers. Granted he didn’t have a safety guard either but he also won’t be using his hands to push the board anymore …

After filming this video I did make a quick push block for the rear. I feel very uncomfortable with the plastic push blocks, so I stopped using them. I need to now get one for my front hand. Maybe something better quality.

How did you like that blackening method? Have you compared it to ebonizing?
@BurlandFeather
@BurlandFeather 27 күн бұрын
I have yet to try ebonizing so I can’t compare them (yet). The Rubio pre color easy really is insanely easy to apply. With the deep grain of the white oak you have to pay attention so you don’t miss a spot. The black is also just that, intensely dark. I will say, make sure that you have fully finished working on the piece before you apply the finish. Too heavy of a touch will remove it, but once the top layer is applied (the oil plus C2) the black is basically permanent.
@suntzu6122
@suntzu6122 27 күн бұрын
@@BurlandFeather I always wondered what wood I would choose to be a white for the black / white color scheme. Which would you use for a pure white colored wood? Keep up the good work man. Maybe consider making a comparison video of those 2 blackening methods.

@@suntzu6122 Holly is by far the “whitest” natural wood. It’s used in inlays quite a bit. If you took any lighter wood like maple, beech, or ash and applied a bleaching process to it you might get similar results. I’m by far not an expert in the finishing process. There’s really so much to it but I think you’re right. It would be fun to make a comparison video.

@@BurlandFeather I havent tried ebonizing yet. Just started looking into woodworking at all. It looks really fun. Its just intriguing technique for how simple (vinegar and 000 steel wool) the mixture is.

Very nicely done. That combination of black oak and a light wood is always a winner for me. I’ve been woodworking for well over 45 years now and, for many years, the way to get darker oak was either to fume it (smelly, dangerous) and using a solution of iron filings and vinegar. I still use that method to this day as it’s cheap and very effective. You can use it on most hard woods that have a tannin content with oak being the obvious one due to its very high tannin content. I watched this build and then your Glen chair. On both you use Rubio. I’ve bought hundreds, maybe thousands, pounds (UK) of Rubio and reckon I’ve thrown away 10% of my money. That’s because the tin for part A seems almost designed to get drips; then air gets in and Rubio skins quickly. Late last year, the Wood Whisperer published a review of all the 2 part hard wax oils on the market in the US. His overall “winner” was Natura Onecoat. I hadn’t heard of it and it wasn’t in fact on sale here in the UK. The makers kindly sent me a sample and I love it. I can see why TWW voted it tops. Firstly, the tin for part A has been designed to prevent drips; the product is slow skinning as well as no VOC and food safe. It seems really easy and smooth to spread; my partly scientific test is that it goes further than Rubio; it certainly costs less per can. Id suggest that you try it out next time you are buying HWO.
