Living full time in RV seems too extreme to me. I think I'd do it only if a war broke out and I needed to steer clear. I bought a small van RV and will use it to mend my orchards in spring and fall, and in between I will keep living in my house. It is 800 years old and it didn't need a major restoration for 300 years, so the upkeep is minimal, the walls are meter+ thick so it never freezes and never heats up too much either, it has its own spring water in the wine cellar, and I pay maybe 30 euros a year in property taxes.

That is true. Even though we bought a fairly large RV we are constantly having to make decisions regarding what stays and what goes. I would start with the essentials. we do not own a trailer but have thought about moveing down south and living in a trailer at an rv park full time just getting tired of living were it is cold and snowy in the winter time. we rent a home now. wonder if this would be cheaper than renting in the long run.
@RVRetirementRedesign2 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, you know it's hard to give you a simple answer to your question. For us, it wasn't just what we'd might potentially save, it was more about the quality of life we would experience. We bought a brand new RV to ensure we would have as large and as solid a home as possible for as long as possible. If you choose to go that route, you will need to use your savings or enter into a loan situation and add a loan payment to your budget. Taxes and licensing is also an extra annual expense. As far as the comparison of renting a home where you currently live, vs owning an RV and renting a space in a different location, it will depend on several factors. First, you'll need to research the cost of full-time space rent. I've noticed that while they can be quite expensive for weekly rentals (especially during high season), when you live there full-time you can find really great monthly rates. Ours is about 1/2 the price on a 12 month commitment as it is as a weekly rental. In many cases, water, garbage, and sewer is included, but electricity is not, and you will now have the added expense of propane that you most likely didn't have in a sticks and bricks home. Moving from a cold climate to a warmer one may save you heating fuel, but that might be a trade off for AC. Do the best you can to estimate and compare the two budgets to see where the savings or extra costs might occur. Our electricity and propane costs were much higher than we expected and then we found out we could get on an annual plan with the propane company that saved us a lot of money. Because you will now "own" your home rather than rent one, you'll need to consider maintenance issues. So far we have not had any issues with leaks etc., (especially living in the mountains of Colorado), but we have had the furnace and fridge cause costly repairs. We had a bit of financial support from Grand Design on the fridge (warranty work) but it was all out of pocket for the furnace ($800 last month). If you purchase a used RV, you will most likely end up with some sort of repairs or changes you will want to make which you most likely didn't have with a rental home. Will you have a storage area on your rental lot or need to rent one? What about adding a deck to your RV or outdoor living options. These are an extra expense that while not annual, should be considered in your planning. Personally, once the full cost of the RV was paid, the monthly rent is slightly less than the going rates in our area if you can even find a decent home to rent. I don't see it as a big savings, but the quality of life is good, and in this Season of Life, that's what i's all about for us! Feel free to email with any other questions, it would be our pleasure to help where we can. [email protected]

Any ideas for getting maintenence & repairs done on a recently purchased used 5th Wheel for a disabled widow on Tight budget??
@RVRetirementRedesign2 жыл бұрын
Unless you bought some kind of warranty when you purchased your RV, I doubt you will be able to find any kind of financial support or discount. The problem we've found with RV maintenance repair is that there are very few knowledgeable folks who are actually in business. Those that are in business and really good, are often kind of expensive and now they are aging and no one wants to take over their business. This can become a real concern in the future.

@RVRetirementRedesign2 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry D, the truth is that you do need to consider repairs for an RV home just as you do for a sticks and bricks home. I'd suggest putting aside just a bit financially every month if possible for upcoming repairs. We are now beginning our 4th year and we've had our fridge and furnace worked on and they were expensive repairs.

I’m confused… Are you retired?
@RVRetirementRedesign2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, yeh, I'm confused too. I tried to retire, but found it's just not in my DNA. I have a masters in education and was a leadership trainer for an international association for many years as well as serving on three different educational board of directors. While I've been out of the field for a few years, I've recently been called back to help with development and training for a couple of my previous positions and started coaching leaders who are transitioning into new positions. I am working with a couple of other colleagues on a new coaching website and once I complete the business structure, I can pick and choose how I'll contribute and for however long I want to contribute. This allows me to enjoy my RV hobby while Bob is enjoying his "work-retirement" season as a fishing guide in the mountains of Colorado. I am truly in a happy season of life.

So glad I found your channel!! I'm retiring to an RV, but am fortunate to have rural land in north Florida. I am also considering building a pole barn around/over it. Sounds like hick living, but I'm now old enough to not care so much. LOL. Trying to retire on funds our generation earned decades ago is a big challenge. Thanks for addt. info I will add to my list of considerations.
@RVRetirementRedesign2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bess, and best of luck! It is a bit challenging to manage especially as the world is changing so rapidly. I've also found that some of the choices we need to make to care for our home might look like "hick" living to others, but being mindful of simple tasteful aesthetics can make a difference and make just about anything look more sophisticated. We live in a new day where we certainly don't have to following an old pattern of thought. So you go create that pole barn, and jazz it up to match your awesome personality and it will be a fantastic home!

I have been living alone in my rv for almost a year now. I drove from East to West coast to live near my son in California. I bought the rv after I got here and paid cash. My rent is reasonable and includes water, sewer and electric. The best part is that the rv park is in a Northern California forest and I live among giant redwood trees. Everything is so beautiful and peaceful here and I am less than 30 minutes from the beach. This has been my dream for at least 10 years. I wanted a simple, peaceful life for my retirement and this is my dream come true. I feel very secure because security drives around the park frequently and there are security cameras. I don't have a lot of maintenance to worry about. The only issue I have is the roof and I hope to get it sealed in a few months.
