One night long ago I lay in my bed, headphones on and a head full of mescaline. I always avoided this song while tripping. I got so lost in the music that before I knew it, I was having terrible visions of fiery high speed travels through stars ending up in the dark with me staring at myself about 25 feet away. Out of nowhere, my other self stopped looking at me, turned his head and screamed as a broadsword stabbed in his head! I screamed as I turned my head and saw a sword stab into my skull. I became aware of what was happening, threw off the headphones and opened my eyes. My dad was standing over me and asked what was wrong with me. I shuddered and after a few seconds said I had been having a bad dream. I can still picture 75-80% of the visuals to this day. That episode happened around 1987. Powerful

Near the end of the coda there’s a series of changes that dovetail the reharmonised first melody and the second melody. That’s a rare bit of thinking to come up with that and completely unexpected. It such a high point of the composition. Amazing.

The greatest metal song ever. So much more than mere metal.

This was the very first time I was listening to Eric Marienthal. At first, I thought it would be a weird abstract introduction for the album, my mind was fixed on nothing would resolve into a melody. Until he appears out of the blue and it was like the universe was indeed opening wide. I was humbled.

It's incredible how people are influenced by the story behind something. If you were to listen to this without knowing that it's Pink Floyd, I bet you'd say it's rubbish (and it is). But because the story is so fascinating and Pink Floyd is an amazing band, then everything they did must be amazing. A kid with a keyboard could do this though. I did better when I was 13. It's childish, messy, lacking of structure, rhythmically and harmonically poor. It's like an improvisation, something you'd develop and clean up. The only part that makes sense is the end.
