It's such a shame that Livingston Taylor's theme song for "Evening", and the campaign that went with it, was so short-lived, as Group W canceled most of the "Evening/PM" shows soon after this.

Patrick Emory would work a third time in St. Louis in the 1990's at KDNL, the ABC station, and also did some weekend talk shows at KMOX. He died in 2016.

Does anyone have a copy of the Kaleidoscope "You Can Do Magic" demo video, produced around 1985 or so? I've looked online and can't find it anywhere.

The chief engineer and technical architect of the GVG 300 switcher was Ed Lindsley - who had been my brother's roommate in college (WSU). Ed was the person who got me interested in electronics, and I followed him and my brother to Grass Valley ... and I started working at GVG in 1983.

Touchscreen version at 05:59 brought back memories. I spent 2 weeks in Zurich in '86 editing a video for Nestles annual general meeting. Good fun. I found the only comfortable way to use the touch screen was with a pencil with an eraser on the end. Otherwise I would get cramp in my hand! You had to hold all the other fingers right out of the way. The touch screen interface never caught on because the keyboard version was cheaper, more reliable, and faster.

Those were the days of real time proprietary effects boxes. A lot of programming, but no rendering and re-rendering. About $150 - $200 an hour at post facilities in L.A. during the late 80's/early 90's. Remember Quantel's Mirage and Sony's System-G?

people may laugh now at the effects. But actually thinking about how that pringles-commercial must have been made at the time with this tech makes me humble...

I really wish it was 1987 all over again. I was only a few years old in '87 and didn't really get to experience it like an adult did. I'd really love to be able to do that ☻

I moved there in 1977 - and left in the late summer of 1980. I'd no idea (until now) that Robin Young had left at the same time. I always associate my years there with Evening Magazine and Robin Young.

Barry Nolan is the only male anchor to have the privilege of working with all three female anchors. Candy (Candace) Hasey was his only teammate that had come after him, and she left before him. Robin Young, partner of (the late) Marty Sender, welcomed Barry. Then she left. Sara Edwards came after Hasey, and Edwards welcomed Jim Watkins. Thanks to all six for making Evening Magazine in Boston on WBZ the success it was for 10+ years!!

Boston was the second city to launch "Evening". San Francisco was the first in 1976. After becoming a big success in both cities, Group W/Westinghouse decided to nationally franchise the show, first to other Group W stations, then to other cities as "PM Magazine". The show had local hosts for each city, and mixed locally-produced segments with segments from other cities. Depending on the station, anywhere from 40% to two-thirds of a typical episode in the early 80s was locally produced.
