The plate umpire is my buddy, Bruce. He is a post season Crew Chief. Nailed this call !!! The defensive player making the play on the ball is protected. The batter/runner is out and all runners return to the last base they occupied at time of pitch.

On a purposeful slide? pitcher had no real intention of making a play on the ball; just wanted to take the 50/50 and could have gotten himself seriously hurt

Sometimes it's more about how fast you can get the ball to first so you don't have as much time to line up your throw when it's a slow roller or you babble the ball. A good first baseman will scoop it up almost every single time.

It's not a weird rule at all, the rule is the same at every level. The batter-runner would be out for interference in MLB, MiLB, NCAA, NFHS, and Little League too.

NOT WEIRD PEOPLE! A very basic interference rule. No runner or batter-runner shall interfere with a defensive player making a play on a batted ball. It is the responsibility of the runner or batter-runner to avoid the contact. The same applies if it happens to one of the infielders!

wHeRe ThE FuCk Is hE SuPpOsEd tO gO? The rules don't give a shit where he goes, as long as he doesn't run into a fielder trying to field a batted ball. This is bread and butter interference. Not a "weird" call. I wouldn't expect casual baseball fans to give a shit about the rules, though. Anything to hate on umpires, right?
