Suriname has been fascinating me since I started doing research in early 2003. Such a unique combination of peoples converging: Native Amazonians, Africans, Javanese, Hindustanis and Europeans all converging to make Paramaribo and Suriname so incredibly unique. I still haven’t had the chance to go - on my bucket list 😊

Also Chinese and Jews and many people are a mix of all that. Suriname is a place that shows many cultures can live next to eachother in peace. But let us not forget Suriname has huge economic problems now post colonialism and their is a transgenerational trauma due to slavery.

So a great film Thanks for producing it. It is truly sad the man has made the worthless metal element gold so valued that people around the world destroy, pollute, kill the wildlife, themselves and the ecosystem all why trying to extract gold from the soil and rocks. We vision they could start an Eco lodge and attract Eco tourist or a rare animal breeding facility. Even a Parrot breeding farm could bring in as much money as extracting toxic gold.

Christenen helpen graag.

excellent documentary. it conveys in very simple terms what the challenges, opportunities and stakes are in suriname. It's all about a fucked up incentive structure that they and all of us in all countries have. It's easy to criticize the kid mining for gold with mercury but like he says, if I don't do this, I starve. So what then?

Good, Goed, Bueno, Bom. Ik spreek span. I speak spanish. I share a history. In english or nederland. I decided: in nederland language. The voice of narrator like a voice in another video 2005 in Georgetown flooded. The indian Nicarao Een leergerierige man die geschiedenis maakte.

They look so much like Venezuelans, the features are so recognisable... I am kind of sad Venezuelans don't have so much interaction with the rest of the Guyanas, it is really important to say this because without the language barrier we definitely are very similar. Even the pronunciation is exactly the same prosody you can find in central to east Venezuela, amazing stuff.

This documentary touched me greatly. I give general classes for elementary and secondary school. I wish someday I went to one these places and spent a season, giving crash courses on the general disciplines. These people only wish knowledge and an official statement that allows them to earn their keep and help their families. Yan's dream of becoming a ship captain is so beautiful, and so is the wish and resolve of the two sisters.

I've lived there for a long time, and at first thought the same as a lot of you: WHY destroy nature, just for a piece of gold? But later on, after traveling and living with the indigenous, I came to realize that poverty really pushes people in a position where it can be hard to resist the gold. I have many friends who tried and tried to get an education, but failed because nobody could sponsor them. And from that place, it's hard to get a job. Judging these people isn't the way, supporting them in finding another way is.
