The CD booklet I have says this is a traditional song and no mention that it was originally written by Paul Giovanni for the 1973 film The Wicker Man. Maybe later pressings corrects this error?

To me, this song is the pinnacle of Nine Inch Nails. It is so beautifully crafted, with so many layers to explore and get lost in, oscillating between menacing quietide to explosive sonic rage. The lyrics follow this paradoxical, compelling pattern, swinging between the extremes of submission and sadism.
