Hi great video! How many labor hours took sanding sand gel coat removal?

Good question! Check out the last video in the series. Danny answers that question. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roC7mmWPaJVpZtk

Installed this on the fwd canopy gap on my LS3. Eliminated a very annoying whistle. My canopy cap has a drawstring and I just put it on loose. Works fine. On my third season with the original seal. Best regards.

Putting seals on the wing is easy if prepared with knowledge and manual dexterity. Removing seals and seal adhesive residue is really difficult and very time consuming. Any advice regarding this task would be greatly appreciated

Watch our Plastic Razor Blade video. The video mentions Acetone. Rubbing alcohol can be used as a an alternative.

Hi Gents. A glider is not a car. You are not allowed to apply thick layers of Bondo on it. It is easy to apply new thin glasslayers and make it smooth but the empty mass of the glider increases, and the center of gravity goes backward. If you ask to do such a job assuring zero mass-increase NO sailplane refinisher will EVER give you a quote or touch your plane. If you get a quote with assured 2 kg's limited mass increase you have the best sailplane finisher in the world.
@wingswheels2 ай бұрын
Bondo was not used or thick layers of any filler. A little weight was gained in the end, but not much. As we all do when getting older ;)

This was how i replaced my rudder combi tapes. The glue was 25 years gooped onto the vertical stabilizer. It simply wouldnt "come off" and the plastic razor (and loads of acetone) got the job done. I used the scraper to "roll" the rubberized adhesive to itself as it came off the surface.

Exactly!

so cost of doing this considering you say 900 hours at $120/hour plus instruments, paint, etc, maybe $150,000? For a 56 year old glider?
@wingswheels4 ай бұрын
Inflation is high, but not $120/hr for a refinish...yet. It's like a new glider now at a cost of less than a 1/4 of a new 15/18 meter glider with almost 90% of the performance. However, being in the family for three generations of glider pilots, it's priceless.

Dear Gods, i hope my eyes deceive me. Please tell me that you are not spraying isocyanate 2k paint without an externally air fed mask? Charcoal filters are simply not adequate. If your lungs get sensitised then you can kiss goodbye to lung function. I've personally treated a man who only spent two weeks as a paint sprayer and ended up on a lung transplant waiting list. This is really REALLY toxic stuff.

Everything of theirs is very well thought out. My only thing I'd do differently (maybe it's an option?) is the power rigger should probably be powered by a LifePO4 so it doesn't drain much when resting. Otherwise it's a great setup.

Hello Sean, thank you for this video, but I do not agree with your way taping mylar. We tape the teflon only on the upper side, but on the wing and the rudder, for stopping the air. Mylar and the thin tape is 90% optic (we use it as well). On the bottom side we use only mylar. Gerhard, Germany
@wingswheels4 ай бұрын
Hello Garhard, The sealing in this video was performed on a DG808C. Manufacturers instruction were followed, with the exception of Acetone. Many, including me believe Acetone is appropriate for limited use on sailplanes. We have two other examples of other types of sailplane sealing on our website ( wingsandwheels.com/mylar-gap-seal.html ) taken from other maintenance manuals. While the end goal is the same, installation methods vary depending on the glider make and model as specified by the manufacturer. Best regards, Wings & Wheels.

Im amazed all of that hardware for the electronics could fit behind the panel, my LS1f panel is jam packed on the back side with just a flarm, s80, radio, and mechanical altimeter, vario, and airspeed indicator

So the panel is now worth as much as the glider?😁

You might think also: it costs money to fly latest instruments and then different money to fly latest glider. Luckily, you can fly latest instruments without money for latest glider, if you want. It is actually pretty enjoyable after getting over the mental hurdle that old glider must have crap instruments.

The LS3a is now like a new glider at a fraction of the price of a new sailplane. Yes, the performance is maybe 90% of a new sailplane, but 25% of the cost after all the improvements.
@lautoka634 ай бұрын
@@wingswheels I don't disagree with that. On the one hand, new gliders are ferociously expensive and, on the other, most of us aren't capable of getting the best out of what we already have. Our Ventus cT is more than good enough for me.

Good looking panel. Personally I'm down to just the one vario with HAWK. It has a backup vario on it with the TE probe. But if I loose power to the LX9050 then I have no vario at all. But the chances of that are pretty slim!

I bought an lxnav vario from Wings and Wheels. Could you kindly create a video on how to connect the vario to a cellphone a[[ like xcsoar. I setup the lxNav with the bluetooth, but my cell phone was not showing the bluetooth signal from the lxnav vario. Is there somethine I am doing wrong?

Question: when it comes to checking the weight and balance. Instead of using scales - wouldn't be "more prudent" to build a strong u-shaped rig, connect the rig to the bolt holding the wings together at the CofG and then hoist the rig and hoist the entire glider at the CofG. Have a pilot sit inside and visually see the glider balance?
@wingswheels11 ай бұрын
That method works on small models but not accurate enough for a full scale sailplane. Weight and balance is performed by raising the fuselage to a specified level then recording weight the main and tail wheel. Calculations are performed which provide an exact CG location.

@wingswheels11 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking. The yaw string web page has a complete explanation wingsandwheels.com/mk-iv-yaw-string.html In short, the yaw string let's you know if the glider is flying straight through the air, not sideways. If you are not flying straight, slipping or skidding, then the yaw string let's you know which rudder pedal to use to properly align the glider.

I was "involved" in sanding off the old gel coat from an ASK21 (recently). I spent, about, 3 hours, sanding about 1 sqft of gel coat. A won't volunteer to do that again. I'd rather pay the folks at Wings and Wheels to do it. It looks like they did a better job than we did.

I've got my LS3 at the same stage now. A LOT of work. The glass on the wings looks less 'porous' than yours but we added a vale cloth to the tailplane and repaired a crack on one flaperon.
