I would like an episode about puzzles that inspired you and the makers that you like to follow. Perhaps even something about how you came to be in this position and how the company was formed. When did you know you wanted to be a puzzle maker/artist? Hearing you eventually talk with some guests would be interesting- other puzzle makers and popular solvers. As for the new puzzle box, I'd worry some people will be left upset if they have to rely on others who might not be as diligent as them, but maybe you've designed around that already. Either way, it's great to see someone trying to innovate in this space and I'll be excited to see whatever you release next.

I'm completely new to this, so apologies if this is a stupid question, but is the box that you get at the end made of wood, or will it be 3D printed? If the former, what materials? I'm interested in getting a puzzle box that is as much a work of art as it is a puzzle

Yes, it is 3d printed, with laser etched panels. This one isn't as much a work of art as most of my other puzzles.

I use Matte Black from Overtuure, and then I apply copper guilder's paste wax, and then a coat of satin lacquer to seal it. The wood panels are dyed and than sealed.

Your Sherlockian subscription allowed me to meet several new friends online who are interested in these puzzles. Without any big youtuber covering the Sherlockian subscription there was a vacuum of information about it on the web. Creating some reddit threads was the only way I was able to find anyone else who even was working on it! So with all that being said the idea of a living puzzlebox is interesting to me since we've already had to collaborate to get through the Sherlockian shipments!

Interesting thoughts. Not sure if I'm into too collaborative puzzles as it's too dependent on other parties completely out of your control. "Travel puzzles" where you need to go certain places to get next clue or something could be cool. Or puzzle prizes for solving where it's co-ordinates to awesome secret (not well known or on the popular tourist path) special places around the world with amazing views, certain experiences (like a cave) or something like this would be fun. I'm probably too traditional in my thinking still, so fun to be challenged on opening up ones mind.

Enjoyed the episode! Getting an insight to the way your brain works is really cool and the living puzzle box sounds fun (the blockchain aspect sounds fascinating as a crypto guy).Recommendations for the next one would be to have video and maybe a guest? Chris Ramsay would make for a great conversation imo. I am absolutely loving the Sherlockian subscription!!! It has been an incredible value and exceeded my expectations by far. I wouldn't hesitate to join a new themed subscription. Keep up the great work 🤝

The 'block-chain' box sounds interesting, I like the idea of people needing to contact one another, but maybe not quite so many as 1000. Perhaps a test with 100 would be a good beginning. - Also, the 'evil boxes' part of it is.. well, let's just say that I prefer the idea of total collaboration and cooperation instead of introducing potential betrayal / dastardliness. One thing, though: The phrase 'blockchain' has rather negative associations, as things like NFTs and cryptocurrencies are almost always scams. Perhaps the term 'massively multiplayer puzzle box' would have less potential for controversy.
@JesseBorn

Blockchain simply uses cryptography to secure a decentralized public ledger in a trustless, immutable manor. Saying it's "almost always a scam" is a very naive blanket statement.

Agree! Avoiding multiple parts and glue is huge, it improves strength and tolerances and time. I usually couldn't just "glue" I had to glue and clamp. The more you can print as a single part the better. 45° angles instead of 90° overhangs wherever possible are key too.
@nerdslikeus6690
@nerdslikeus6690 2 ай бұрын
Instead of inserting the flat part, what if you tilted the whole printer 90 degrees so the part can print with gravity. When that layer is done, you can tilt it back to normal.
@nerdslikeus6690

The part should be stuck to the bed, so it shouldn't fall off.

If you are making a lot of these parts maybe you can set up the printer to tilt on a servo motor. It could be like a budget 4th axis.

Referencing the written Canon of Sherlock Holmes a simple textual analysis of keywords. Dear (363) Watson (1037), “Dear Watson” (87) [only appears once as dear Watson rather than “my dear Watson”] I have arrived (82) at the manor (35). “have arrived” is only used once: Doyle, Watson, and Holmes uses a different tense. “the manor” (16) always finishes with “house “ [manor appears once outside of the context of house once, once the man with the surname of manor is excluded.] There is an air of resentment (0) and anger (48) within this house. “air of” (44) “airs” (3) [Feeling vs fact, does Holmes have feelings?] I am sending the complete case file, to you, for safekeeping (0, and 0 variations). ‘file’ is often used as a verb, only thrice in similar context’ “case file” (0) Holmes consults back files of newspapers of ‘The Times’ and ‘old files of the paper’ twice in the works though Homes does instruct “You can file it in our archives, Watson. Some day the true story may be told.” The box, the documents (19), and every piece of evidence (145). Communicate (16) with me, by code (4) only. [Holmes uses the word ‘cipher’ (23)] If any of the suspects (1 as noun) realize (61), you have the keys to the case (807). You may be in great danger. Keep all the files hidden (26) until I arrive to collect them in person. It may be you should find (601) a clue (105) that eludes (0,0) me. There is the possibility (25,43)that I may not return. In that case, it will be up to you to: solve (73) the riddles (0,2 singular), crack the codes, inspect the evidence, and open the mysterious (29,187) puzzle (51) box. Please not that a counted reference is appears in the text as written by Doyle and penned by Watson; and is not limited just to quotations of Holmes. reference wiki Sherlockian game Package delayed by weather: ice/rain.

Interesting overlay at 0:47 to 0:51 almost looks like a variation of a pigpen cipher in the ghosted image. edit: There is a clearer frame near 0:50 that shows I am mistaken and that it is probably more of a clock hand cipher. The pocket watch might have been foreshadowing. (For all I know it is gerbling for aesthetic reasons.) Not sure it is worth it to run ffmpeg to extract the frames, increase the brightness, to get ten or so characters from the center of the fringe. Maybe a dozen possible characters once combining frames. edit2: the thumbnail shows more detail approximately 33 characters in the lower and there is a upper as well. Granted this box doesn't look much like the one depicted laser cut/engraved on the December 15 instagram story.

I like the idea of going back to your earlier work and looking at it through a more experienced lens...BUT I think you're being too hard on your past self. I bet 15-yr-old you was super proud of that box. You've definitely come a (ridiculously!) long way since then. Just a friendly suggestion, but maybe emphasize more how you could improve the design with your current skills instead of pointing out all the flaws. That said, anyone starting out shouldn't worry about achieving perfection on the first (or even second, or third...) build, no matter what age they are. Just building anything relatively functional is a great accomplishment when first starting out. Oh, and I love that you included solutions to your past puzzles, please post more videos like that, at least for puzzles you've 'discontinued'. Thanks!!

I like your tricks to achieve precision with the CNC. But doesn't wood movement with humidity negate the need anyway?
@JesseBorn
@JesseBorn 5 ай бұрын
Well, wood movement is a thing, however it depends on the species, the grain orientation, and the size and shape of the wood piece. If you are super consistent with your grain orientation the wood movement will be minimalized.
