Hi! Wondering why my gradebook is showing a much lower percentage (i.e., 65% because the final project has yet to be graded). The student(s) should see 100% vs. 65%. Does that make sense?
@AngieTeachesКүн бұрын
One possibility (which happened to me this quarter!) is that you have an assignment with a past date on it. If you have the Canvas assign 0s automatically, all of those scores will be a 0. In Grades, you can either hide the assignment grades by hovering on the column name and clicking the 3 dots, then Hide grades. You can also get to 'Set Default Grade' by clicking the 3 dots and assigning a blank grade to all. If that isn't it, go to Assignments and check that your categories and assignments are in order. I hope this helps!

Is there a way to see specifically how many discussions a student has done?
@AngieTeachesКүн бұрын
The easiest way would be in Grades. Click "Apply Filter", then filter by Discussions or whatever assignment group your discussions live in. Now your grade book will show only those types of assignments. I'll let you know if I think of another way.

This video is useless unless you have a "practice course" to setup new courses. What if you don't have that as an option?
@AngieTeaches2 күн бұрын
You can do all of this setup work in your actual, unpublished course. We get ours 2 months before classes start. I don't, personally, use practice courses. But you can also ask your Canvas administrator to create a sandbox course for you.

Wonderful video by a very talented teacher - thank you. I wonder, are annotations visible to students *before* they are published? I want to be able to annotate essays/assignments with feedback and only publish grades all at once. And I don't want students to see the markings I am making during that time! (I have set the Grade Posting Policy to "Manual" so presumably the grades are still hidden until I release them.)
@AngieTeaches3 күн бұрын
Great question! I tried it out with my Test Student, just to be sure, and neither the annotations, grade, or comment show to the student until grades are published using the Manual Posting Policy. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

I have a questionnn, regardless the coefficient of x do we always divide by -1? Or did we divide it by -1 to distribute the -3? I'm pretty sure the purpose of the division part is to convert it to positive but it only made me question myself so sorry for the trouble🥲
@AngieTeaches10 күн бұрын
You are right-only divide by a negative if the x coefficient is negative. Great question!!

I liked your video, and so here are two other questions on canvas, but not related to this video topic. I did not find any video on it in your account. 1) In Canvas LMS, I am trying to see all the questions I have inside an Item Bank. But for each question, I have to click to open and see the answer options. Is there any way I can expand ALL the questions at the same time? 2) In Hot Spot questions, what if my question has four hot spots? How do I set that up? E.g., picture of a human body. Identify the hands, chest, and legs. Thank you! [Please do not get mad at me!]
@AngieTeaches13 күн бұрын
Great questions: 1) When you open the Question Bank in Classic Quizzes, there's a box above the questions you can click that says 'Show Question Details'. 2) Only one hot-spot per question. But many users in the Canvas Community have suggested allowing multiple per question.
@AngieTeaches13 күн бұрын
There is no 'Show Question Details' in Item Banks for the New Quizzes engine, so you are stuck with expanding each with the "V" one by one.

I have a grade category that has three components. Quizzes (eight of them). Library workshops (three of them). And class participation. Each element is out of a 100. So total 1200. This is worth 20% of the semester grade. How do I go about setting this up in Canvas? I am new to it.
@AngieTeaches14 күн бұрын
SUCH a good question. Canvas weighs assignments within a category by points, so the easiest way to set that up is with one assignment category called Quizzes with a weight of 20%. All of these assignments will live in that group, each worth 100 points. I’d label them clearly, like “Quiz #1” or “Participation: Interview Your Classmate”, etc. However, if your grades are all based on points-1200 is out of a total 6000 possible, leave off the % weight, and give them their own assignment groups. The default weight in Canvas is all by points. I hope this helps! Let me know, if not.
@PotheekAami13 күн бұрын
@@AngieTeaches Thank you! I made a Quiz category and was trying to insert that inside a higher category. I found out, nested categories are not allowed in Canvas. So, I made an "Exam - 20%" category, and individually included all eight quizzes (Q1-Q8), participation, and workshops (W1-W3) as individual assignments inside that category. Each of the 12 assignments are worth 100 each. Also, to respond to your suggestion, I feel more comfortable with categories (BlackBoard days) as they help me organize things better (perhaps visually). And not everything is weighed the same anyways. tl;dr : )

@AngieTeaches28 күн бұрын
Such a good question! The only way for your students to not see the assignment in grades is assignment by assignment. When you're creating or editing the assignment, under 'Display Grade As' choose 'Not Graded'. Otherwise, the assignments will show in the grade book with an ! icon, which states the assignment does not count towards the final grade when clicked. I wish there was a better way.

This is great info. Thank you. I am new to Canvas after years of using D2L. In D2L, you could type one comment that would go to the grade book for ALL students to view. I used it often with weekly discussions. I would choose "grade all" and type a comment on key takeaways for the weekly discussion. This was a huge timesaver. I would then just add comments individually based on their submitted work. In Canvas, I cannot figure out how to post one comment to ALL students and end up having to copy/paste the comment 30+ times. Where is this feature in Canvas?
@AngieTeachesАй бұрын
I wish Canvas could do this!!! There is a way that you can save and reuse comments, but it's not great. When you're grading, you'll see a speech bubble above the comment box. Click on it and it brings you to a place where you can save and re-use comments. I'm not a fan. My work-around has been sending out an announcement with general comments to the class when I've finished grading. You could also send something to the class through the Inbox.
