John had much more talent but Jimmy had better footwork compared to this.

So, he was about 55 years old in this video. He should be in a lot better shape.

John has less of a ‘stroke’ and more of a put the racket somewhere behind the ball and then hit the ball with it. Just a feel player rather than a technician.

Just like to add to comments below about McEnroe's volley. Its interesting to see him play with a modern racquet and stringing; every single ball right in the middle of the strings, and you would expect that. During professional years he used a Dunlop Max 200g but strung with 19870s and 1980s strings at about 40-42 pounds by the standards of the day very loose - but the logic as it was explained to me was that he was able to keep the ball on the racquet face for longer, so he tended to massage his volley a little and make a last second decision about where he wanted to go with the shot. It gave his shots a sort of slingshot effect and I daresay also allowed him to hit both backhand and forehand without changing grip. But he could conceal where he was going to hit until the last second. Scary player to face on the other side of the net I'm sure - especially as a lefty! Like trying to get a hit off Sandy Koufax in his prime

This video is clearly faster xx% than normal. Why do like this? John McEnroe doesn't deserve this.

amazing that he still gets frustrated with himself when he makes mistakes as if he were still playing on tour... even at his age you can tell when hes on the court, hes still a perfectionist and a student of the game

The grip he uses on the forehand is not quite a continental. It's a conservative eastern.
@enematwatson1357Ай бұрын
He really did use one grip for everything and, yes, it was faintly forehand oriented. Quite how he could hit a backhand drive with it is beyond me. 😅

McEnroe and his technique looks like a child tossing an unbearable heavy club. The child was told to hit the ball over the net to the other side. If you are given such a club, you will play exactly like that.
Think it’s sensational that he continues to play! Is great for the sport!

it is so amazing to see how he is hitting the balls now. Incredibly 1950th style... But again, it is absolutely unbelievable how he won so many grand slams with that forms. He got to be one of the most genius and talented players ever..... He does not even change his forehand & backhand grip. they are both "Continental" ha ha ha Just amazing...
