I actually surfed a winged keel zap a couple of times back in the day… it had its moments but in all it was stiff, jerky, and hard to manage… I’d take an MR twin over it all day long!!!

Cool, Cheyne was my favourite surfer. This comp was the only time I've been to Bells. Went on a road trip with my cool parents, (RIP Mum ) in the caravan. Scored great waves all the way down from Queensland. In Vic I remember thawing out with the 5 cent hot showers in Torquay caravan Park and the public shower was 20 cents I think. The day after this final was pumping at Bells, got a coupla good ones along with a solid thrashing. Great memories, cheers.

No Aztec Raceway, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I will have to clarify that in the description. They do a great job for our Vintage club, always giving us a track more suited to the older bikes.

Is that the 169? Looks kinda small... Unless you're like squatch size..
@chrisgoione99924 жыл бұрын
Haha, no, I am only 5’9”. It is actually a 165 cm. Plenty of float as it is wide, and has the shaper series profile. I actually wish it was the 169 though.

@@chrisgoione9992 thanks! I just picked up the 169. Wanted to do the 174 buuuuttttt.... It won't fit in any bag that I own!
@chrisgoione99924 жыл бұрын
Ernie D I think you are going to love the Big Gun it is one of my favorite boards, and it definitely rides smaller than it is. It just plows through any chop. If you have never ridden the shaper series profile, give it a good chance. It is different than other profiles. I found it is very rear leg dependent. Once you ride that profile a little, there is nothing I have ridden like it. Very surfy feeling. Cool board, good luck.

The winged fin is supposed to create lift, I get it, but those boards still suffer from what all single fins do. I remember, I had one for a while. I think Cheyne won in SPITE of the winged fin, he was that good. Would have done better on a thruster. I know why he went in that direction because I am age- contemporary with him, and I remember it well. But I thought then and do now, that he was off track. Some things work better than others. If you want to have a different surfing experience by using different boards, then do so, I certainly do. But I wouldn't do it if I was focussing on being world champ. I would use what works best in a competition, which is the thruster.
@standupstraight96914 жыл бұрын
@@BarbarraBay I dont believe his tiny winged fin would allow the board to foil above the surface, and I cant see it, but no point arguing about that.Scream in blue is about his competetive decline, and its surely no coincidence that his insistance on riding questionable boards is the reason. youll notice that modern foil boards that ride above the surface arent really capable of sharp, critical turns. thats what extra fins on a thruster do. His boards were still single fins at the end of the day, which are inferior to thrusters in competitve surfing, for better or worse. I dont ride a thruster anymore and I dont care about comps, so im not a thruster fanboy. I suppose the takeaway of it is that he was using a maverick design design that didnt pan out for him, and you dont see many standard winged fins on standard boards. yes you can get them, but they wont make your surfing better, just different. My take on the old winged keel, and I had one, is that at certain attitudes/angles in your turns, the wings are going to be facing downwards against the flow like the elevators on a plane, making not lift but drag. That is exactly what I experienced with a winged keel, even though the board is designed for it. A yacht (Australia II) is a different kettle of fish altogether, and not really comparable to a surfboard IMO.
@yowie3692 жыл бұрын
I agree, in real life that board actually looked stiff to me.
