The ghost street is located in what used to be a neighborhood called the Haymarket, which was located between the Oregon District and St. Anne's Hill. The federal urban renewal policies of blighted areas of the mid 50's to late 60's was essentially to level and clear. The Haymarket was mostly demolished in 1960, with land sales starting in 1961 with groundbreaking of the Dayton Towers beginning in 1962 and finishing in 1963. The southeast portion of the Oregon District had some of the same demolition happening and a grassroots movement to save the rest of the Oregon prevented it from suffering the same fate as the Haymarket. Google Daytonology or Jeff's research at Urban Ohio for some great history of Dayton's neighborhoods.
