I was trying to understand the mechanics of Plural effusion or Pulmonary Oedema that affected my cat, my guilt after only giving a small quantity of sub q fluid therapy, at home. I noticed Hisss Tachycardia breathing, the following morning, rushed him to Essendon Emergency Hospital, oxygen kindly given on arrival. Sadly, the only humane choice was to euthanise as the squamous cell carcinoma on his nose, obstructed breathing, fluid overload, causing Plural effusion & making it hard to breathe. He had been slowly dying at home (thats why the flies were drawn to him). When I examined his mouth, following his death I noticed the dental disease in his lower jaw, just 8 months after paying $1,500 for a dental clean, scale/polish+extraction! He also developed an oral tumour, I was completely unaware of. That explains why he no longer tolerated teeth brushing after the dental procedure. His health completely deteriorated by the 17th Birthday. I made sure his final 12 months were as enjoyable as possible, & kept him comfortable with daily Maloxicam, plus a delectable weekly rotation of steamed Barramundi, Salmon, baked chicken fillets, raw Kangaroo, & home made chicken soup w/jelly. Mmmm...A rather spoilt kitty indeed. Cats are very much like us humans and I understood my cat well. He would not have wanted to live if he couldn't enjoy a good feed (painful oral tumour). So I agreed to allow Vet to sedate, then euthanise, & my darling old Mann's passing on the 22/12/25 at 5:08pm was peaceful. The Vet, a kind, logical & compassionate woman, assisted me to weigh up the reasons why it needed to be done sooner than later. She managed to stabilise his breathing, he wasn't stressed when she induced a deep sleep... allowing him to hAVA peaceful journey to cat heaven. It was a good death. (Bonum Mortis) Fin

My cat had elevated breathing (around 36 bpm) in late April and was seen by a vet. An x-ray was done. No treatment/care plan was offered nor a request for a follow-up consultation. His elevated breathing rate continued for the next few months and I took him back to the same vet practice but different vet in mid September. By this stage he had lost 1kg. The vet then had a ECG/heart ultrasound done. This showed that my cat had pleural effusion and restrictive cardiomyopathy. The vet compared the x-ray from the initial visit in April to the ultrasound in September and explained that the heart looked normal in the April x-ray but had changed shape and that there was fluid in the chest by September. My question is should the vet have had a ECG/heart ultrasound done initially and if so would this have shown signs of the beginning of the restrictive cardiomyopathy. If so would the development of restrictive cardiomyopathy have been preventable through early intervention, treatment and or medication? Thanks for your response.

I’m a parent of a 11 yo cat. Last 5months his echo was fine with abnormal proBNP. The last two day he has been hospitalized for heart failure. His EF is 9% , the vet thinks he has RCM😢 Hope you guys can invent a drug or monoclonal ab or whatever to fix or slow down this disease.
