26:23 Did you get to choose each action for the storyboard? If not, I feel like it's hard to get a closeup shot in there. The first shot has to be an establishing shot, and the rest deal with two subject matters that are at a distance from eachother. I guess you could get one in for the 'Possum runs away from the shark fin' action but it'd be hard to tell the distance between the possum and the shark fin. And there's nothing wrong with a central composition for the establishing shot, especially since Possum is at the center of the story. So overall I disagree with their assessment if your reasoning is correct. Yet again I'm not an animator so who knows
@sophiecorbett6293
@sophiecorbett6293 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your thoughts! We actually do get to choose each action for the storyboard (which means I should have chosen better ones lol), the only things that are normally given to us to include is the character (possum) and the “theme” or “moral” which is usually relatively open ended, and you then pick whatever four panel story you want that falls under the provided theme. For the central composition, I’d say that the concern I’d have with setting it center would be that it would break the “rule of thirds” rule which is normally pushed in layout and composition in general animation (unless it’s a stylistic choice)!

@@sophiecorbett6293 Thanks for replying! That makes sense. It's important to show you understand those rules if applying to an animation school, of course. Maybe you could've done the character on the right and the shark in the background on the left, then some kind of closeup shot for the fourth one??? Regardless, you did much better in the second one anyway. Also I love your layouts! You have a great sense of perspective and foreground-middleground-background, which really makes the enviromnent feel alive

what does it mean International cut off and Domestic cut off? you guys have different recrutations depending on where you're from? Or it just has to do weater you have International Baccalaureate or some canadian equivalent? That seem so weird to me....
@sophiecorbett6293
@sophiecorbett6293 2 жыл бұрын
So Sheridan does have different portfolio cut offs depending on where you’re from, I’m not 100% sure why exactly but it could have something to do with them wanting to prioritize Canadian applicants since it’s a Canadian program? If that’s the case, there is far few international spots then Canadian spots, so it becomes more competitive and demands a higher score to get in. Unfortunately though it makes it much more challenging for international students to get accepted, which really sucks. :/

Oh my, your portfolio looks lovely! A few things stuck out to me in the Storyboard Comparison, so I thought I'd share my thoughts: Lemme start off by saying, wow there's huge improvement in the camera angles! The first storyboard's camera is jumping around from the front view, downwards, an aerial view and the front view again. On the other hand, the second is the front, down, front and front again - sort of a swooping arc. Very pleasing! The first also zooms in and out chaotically while the second regularly zooms in to build anticipation in the first 3 panels and zooms out suddenly to show an extended range of motion in the last panel The props were better used - the doughnut and the shark fin seem stiff in the first storyboard (i.e. stiff lines that don't deform to show speed) while the flower in the second storyboard a much more vivid part in the story (moving stem, petals) And of course, as you'd mentioned, the character isn't fully visible in the first storyboard which is a bit counterproductive for character storyboards, but that was beautifully corrected in the second, where there are construction lines, and cool angles that show that you have a good grasp of the character On the whole, really neat, thanks for sharing this, got a good bit of inspiration from this!

Hi! An acceptance into Sheridan’s animation program relays entirely on your portfolio score that you submit. There’s a cut off for the portfolio score that you need to achieve to be accepted, and it’s different for both domestic and international students. There are a few other requirements, like making sure you have a 68% (I think?) overall grade average as well as a couple other art credits. I’d take a look at Sheridan’s website to confirm and see the full list of requirements needed! www.sheridancollege.ca/programs/bachelor-of-animation#tab=admission-requirements

Thank you so much! For me, I found 1) studying composition (rule of thirds, foreground mid ground and background etc) and then looking at how other people apply that into their compositions, as well as 2) looking at other applicant’s accepted portfolio layouts to see what they did right, as well as looking at professional layouts from the industry from different films and shows (take a look at characterdesignreferences.com/art-of-animation -it’s a solid animation database for layouts and overall vis dev) and 3) looking up references when you are creating you layouts (ie. photos of rocks, trees, desks, chairs, you name it) so that you get an idea of what these things look like!

What do you think is the best choice: Only applying for Sheridan and work hard to meet their requirements or applying to multiple schools?
@sophiecorbett6293
@sophiecorbett6293 2 жыл бұрын
I would try to apply to multiple schools if possible! It’s always good to have back up plans for other programs as Sheridan’s animation program is pretty competitive, and especially if you’re not planning on applying more then once and are happy with an offer from any kind of animation program. That being said, sometimes putting your complete focus and attention on one portfolio will create the best results and can give you the best chance of being accepted…. so it really depends on what is most important to you and how set you are on the sheridan program specifically.

hey sophie, my name is pavan. i am from India. currently I am studying BA animation and VFX and I am in my third semester now. i was wondering..... when preparing for the portfolio, do you need to have previous knowledge of topics like animation principles, types of shots etc?. i am well aware on these topics, but I just wanted to know would it be difficult for a person who doesn't have knowledge on these topics (like the process of drawing layouts model sheets) to get admission in Sheridan?
@sophiecorbett6293
@sophiecorbett6293 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! So generally I’d say basic knowledge on things like animation principles and camera shots etc are definitely important to be aware of when creating your portfolio! I’ve seen portfolios before that have been rejected or received a low mark, not necessarily because of the quality of the work, but because points were lost due to things that could easily have been corrected had they known. Luckily there are lots of accessible resources nowadays that would help teach the basic info!
