Think of all the money we'll save by shifting 50%+ of our & our colleagues' long-distance travel... We can cover the costs of 1 grad student researcher for every 50 faculty members who participate (& lottery to give that grad student to those who participate). And our colleagues will be better rested, from n ot jet-setting off to do keynotes in person. (I always do my presentations remote. 1 hour of seminar plus lunch with some colleagues elsewhere is never worth 20+ hr of travel!)

Thanks for doing this! How about setting up a similar webinar for those of us hosting carbon-free conferences to come together & try to get every discipline to do such things? (e.g., Bridging Transportation Researchers is for everyone - globally, with 5 hr/day x 2 days of sessions [with keynotes at the start] in both eastern & western hemispheres, so everyone can be wide awake for at least half the presentations) Thanks again.

And what, precisely, does a "Population Health" building (or better put, the people inside) do?
@sustainableUW
@sustainableUW Жыл бұрын
In 2016, the University of Washington announced the launch of the Population Health Initiative. Working at the intersection of human health, social and economic equity, and environmental resilience, population health is an inherently collaborative field. The initiative harnesses education, resources and funding to encourage cross-disciplinary teamwork among UW faculty at the tops of their fields. More information: www.washington.edu/populationhealth/

@@sustainableUW That may sound good, but it isn't "precise" as I was asking. As an example I went through the UW website for more specific details on the programs, but what I found were generalizations of action, not specifics of the (research) actions themselves: For example: RESEARCH AREAS Associate Professor Jin Ha Lee Associate Professor Jin Ha Lee researches sociotechnical information systems, including gaming. The UW iSchool conducts meaningful and rigorous research examining the relationships between people, information and technology. Our research efforts are highly interdisciplinary, allowing us to respond to significant, real-world challenges and make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Ongoing work focuses in the following areas: Data Science Identifying, analyzing, visualizing and securing data to advance responsible data-driven decision making, innovation, policy, and social good. Fields of study include: machine learning; visualization; social networks; data curation; open data. Digital Youth Understanding, supporting and enhancing the interactions of youth with digital information and technology. Fields of study include: digital media and learning; STEM learning; child-computer interaction; information literacy. Health and Well-Being Finding, using and managing information to promote public health. Fields of study include: health informatics; Native health; assistive technology. Human-Computer Interaction Making technology easier to use and content more accessible. Fields of study include: user experience; design theory and methods; technology for social good. Indigenous Knowledge Studying the intersection of information, technology, and Native communities. Fields of study include: material culture; cultural heritage; museum studies. Information and Society Promoting digital inclusion and empowering people through access to information and its ethical use. Fields of study include: information policy; ethics; diversity and inclusion; critical information studies; technology and social change; information and communication technology for development. Learning Sciences Developing independent and smarter users and producers of information. Fields of study include: informal learning; digital literacy; museum studies. Library and Information Science Developing systems and services for the collection, organization, preservation, access, and use of information, and promotion of information literacy through instruction and expertise. Fields of study include: future of libraries; youth services; information literacy; data services; metadata. Sociotechnical Information Systems Leveraging information assets and systems to meet the strategic goals of organizations and needs of users. Fields of study include: information systems; design theory and methods; computer supported cooperative work; social media; gaming. **** While all of these paragraphs mention many concepts, they actually say nothing at all of "precise practices" which is what the general public should be interested in, informed of and have access to. This was my initial point in asking "precisely" what occurs within the new UW Health building.

@@sustainableUW And as a matter of personal perspective, if the specifics of research actions are to be kept "secret" for whatever the justification, then my argument would be that the research is not "scientific" for the benefit of the many, but "politicized ideology" for the enrichment and empowerment of the few.

What is the historical racial and gender make up of the entire student body at UW for the last ten years? Comparisons to general societal demographics would be indicative of racial justice as far as the "inclusion" and "diversity" requirements. Why be racist?
