Wow man those are epic! It's also interesting that these are hydraulic when the passenger elevators across from them are traction.

Nice sounding hydraulic freight elevators, even though many floors are locked off. But I don't get it why they had to replace one of the elevators after 9 years.

This used to be a late 50’s or so Westinghouse Freight elevator with just front bi-porting courion doors. It appeared to be beautifully maintained, aside from the top bi-part door being cockeyed. You can see that the original frame is still there but they just didn’t opt for full-height doors when they modded it to Schindler. That old Westinghouse was a vintage beast and I miss it dearly. In the early 90’s I was fascinated by it and whenever we were taken to the Museum I’d check it and was even offered a ride on it once when I was like 5 by an employee who noticed me so interested in it but I was too scared lol. The loft above used to have no access, and there was actually a pipe organ on the loft for years when they first built this original 1916 building. If interested you can Google search old photos of the garden court.

wow that’s interesting. never would’ve thought this replaced something original

@@neohelevators right, same here. After not being there for over a decade I was unpleasantly surprised to find that they completely converted this one. I’ll bet the main reason they converted it to passenger/freight was because they made the loft accessible to everyone and there used to be no passenger elevator that served the loft that I’m aware of. So just the freight used to serve that top floor where there is a much shorter door frame/ceiling and some sort of archives library still there. It had the 50’s style black buttons and the floor indicator was the old-fashioned rolling wheel, for lack of a better term for it. Of all the pictures I took of freight elevators when I was younger, this was one of the few that I didn’t, mainly because cameras weren’t so discreet back then and it’s always been so dark where the elevator entrance is, though in hindsight I should have just asked the staff. Otherwise I would show you a pic of it. So, this doorway here was formerly the only one viewable. The basement, ground floor and 3rd floor opened to areas that were all restricted to staff only. There used to be a large, dark curtain that would be used to hide this elevator, though it wasn’t drawn most of the time whenever I’d go there. The passenger one that you filmed in nature video was also modded. I can’t remember if it was a Westinghouse as well, as I wasn’t as interested in passenger elevators as freights. I do remember that it too had the 50’s style black buttons.
