Thanks for the video 🙂 . I was "Sectioned" and the staff were great and the one young doctor ....(i think) is or was the kindest and most companionate doctor i have ever encountered 🙂 . (this is also because ...... he knew all their "tricks" and was to set in place avoidance)... also . I was treat outside the hospital so brutally .... i'm left with a ruptured stomach that everyone is trying to cover up . Its a shame i do not know a lawyer who knows what they CANNOT do ?????.... as i would do the "spade work" for him or her ............. as they have no answer = COMPENSATION . Thanks for reading

I was recently 136'd and put on a section 2. I was discharged after 3 days, but it can go up to a 28 day period. Section 3 is longer. Some of the women I spoke to, had been there for 5 months or longer as it can go up to a year or 6 months.

😢 it's absolutely shocking the mental health system in the UK and the treatment towards mentally unwell and other mental health conditions we are not well treated at all and I am disgusted and hurt and traumatized by the treatment of me and my friends and family who suffer with mental illness. I thought private hospitals would be better than NHS hospitals! This is absolutely shocking 😔 so many people are being mistreated and so many lives being lost or people like me left suffering and in debt and having an impact on loved ones caring for me when they need to work to pay bills.. but working parents are rewarded with more childcare and I don't think the government realise all the people suffering financially and mentally who fall through the net

@maskedamhp 3 ай бұрын
I've assessed hundreds of people during my time as an AMHP, and it's never been in semi darkness. It's either been in daylight, or a lighted room. If for no other reason, it's important to be able to see the person you are assessing properly, and also to be able to take notes, complete the paperwork etc.

I've reading on Social Services and when it comes to affluent people. Who knows the system with good lawyers, basically roadblocking them at every turn: complaints, legal challenges etc. What's it like working in mental health services when it comes to affluent patients who may not want the help or to be hospitalised? Can they book private treatment and therefore remove any NHS Involvement?

I think it’s good that you didn’t succumb to pressure and investigated the situation properly. I am wondering about the situation of a person who doesn’t live alone in a house they own, they live with others, and their room is squalid and smells, so nobody wants to live with them and they’re at risk of becoming homeless. Are there techniques to help them without having to always help them clean up, which gets tiresome.

Where is the line, on a patient's right to refuse treatment or medication, and doctors or psychiatrists viewing it as self inflicted injury or harm?
@maskedamhp
@maskedamhp 6 ай бұрын
It hinges on the individual's mental capacity to make decisions. The default is that people have the right to make unwise decisions, which might include self harm. But if it is assessed that a person lacks the capacity to make those sorts of decisions as a result of mental disorder, then it would be appropriate to consider invoking the Mental Health Act to manage those risks and behaviours.
@kimo255868

It is interesting that substance use disorder ( alcohol and drug use) is explicitly excluded for the purpose of defining a mental disorder under the act. However, true evidence suggests that it actually could be one of the few (if not the only one!) that we can call a mental health disease rather than a mere disorder.

Hi Steve, Thank you as always for your informative engaging videos. I stumbled upon your channel recently and find it really interesting! Just wanted to discuss one point you raised. That Digoenes (Senile Squaler) is not a mental disorder in itself. However, My understanding that it is as it is a hoarding disorder which falls under OCD and related disorders in the ICD11. Also the MHA (which desperately needs its delayed reform) definition of a mental disorder would cover hoarding disorder as it is clearly psychopathological and impacting his overall functioning. However, whether this mental disorder was of nature and/or degree that warrants detention is completely a different question.
@maskedamhp
@maskedamhp 6 ай бұрын
I don't thinking hoarding in itself amounts to a mental disorder. But there comes a point at which the behaviour begins to impact adversely on the person and those around them and becomes pathological. My own mother and my father-in-law were both hoarders, but while their behaviour could be infuriating at times I could not have said that they were mentally disordered in any classic sense, and certainly not within the meaning of the MHA.

@@maskedamhp of course, I agree that every presentation should be weighed separately on its own. Most of the mental illness presentations lie on a spectrum bordering with normality. However, I believe from your formulation that his presentation and its impact may fall within the remit of a mental disorder as defined by the Act. Keep uploading new videos. Thanks 👍🏼

very useful case as there have been many men (sorry but that is the fact!) who present in such a way but is this their true and real presentation or a manifestation of a mental illness? It is therefore very useful to have back ground information. As an AMHP I needed to advise a S12 doctor that the presentation of a patient at the assessment should not be considered to be a phase of bipolar but they were genuinely very talkative and difficult to interrupt.

The point I was making in this video was about how you manage abuse and personal insults in a professional context. But people who become unwell, especially with bipolar disorder or psychosis, frequently do not recognise that their mental state is deteriorating, and do not think they are ill. Home Treatment only works if the person is prepared to accept help to keep out of hospital.

@@maskedamhp I agree with you, Psychotic people have no insight into there illness 'lived experience' etc. I've always had Home treatment when things go badly wrong, no self care, very bad symptoms. Stuck in my flat haven't washed for a week, waiting for them every night to come round. I started getting better, I've heard Home treatment is far cheaper than a hospital admission, if people are a danger to themselves or others they should be admitted. Some people never learn however, they quickly go back to the old ways drinking etc and hanging round with their mates. Not taking their meds, etc They might as well get a season ticket. People that argue with doctors etc, I'm going to sue for this etc then back they go. Their family and friends get worn out with it. You have to be seriously ill to be admitted these days. So I got lucky really, Home treatment was better for me. You can recover but you have to be willing to change.... Just my 'lived experience' really

One of the other issues I've found, is when Police attend with male officers for a female patient in our LA - There is a local force policy, that there must be a female officer in any search of a female patient, and so this can add further delay. I guess if the AMHP role was easier, we'd all get bored 😅 Right Care Right Person is just around the corner for our LA also... should be interesting
