I love White Eyes, especially Zosterops palpebrosus and Z. simplex. Is this one Z. senegalensis? Z. simplex or Z. palpebrosus was established in California, but state wildlife officers exterminated them by luring them with recordings and netting and trapping them. Now Z. japonicus is established in California.
@TropicalAviaryBirdsКүн бұрын
Interesting, I understand the news not to introduce new species, but I really love the zosterops. Yes, these are senegalensis😉

@TropicalAviaryBirds My vision is now so bad that I missed the female White Eye eating fruit on the right side of the video! At present, California is not taking action against the White Eyes, estrildids, and Pin Tailed Whydahs in their state. White Eyes are unlikely to impact any of our native birds or wildlife, but might do some limited damage to fruit in a state where agriculture is very important. Acridotheres mynas were banned in the US because of their potential as harmful frugivores. Our New World warblers and vireos may compete with them for small insects and spiders. As you know, Zosterops are nectar thieves, bypassing pollination by pecking into the nectary areas of flowers to sip nectar. Bumblebees sometimes do the same. There has been a longtime practice among state and federal wildlife agencies in the US and Canada to gain funding and revenue by often sensationalist funded media campaigns against "invasives", many of which have been here for centuries. At the same time, they earn hunting license revenue by raising and releasing non native galliform birds. The public pushback against such campaigns is also too often emotion driven. Campaigns against "invasive" psittacines and Mute Swans invariably trigger angry defense of these popular though ecologically disruptive birds, but most US citizens know nothing about Zosterops or Munias. Corvids seem to inspire little sympathy. Netherlanders who sought protection of an introduced population of House Crows in Hoek van Holland failed, but no outcry was triggered when Canada exterminated a group of +80 Western Jackdaws that somehow crossed the Atlantic.

@@TropicalAviaryBirds I am totally amazed that you live in such a cold area and breeding these birds. He said something about your having a lot of bad luck with canaries one thing I've learnt do not feed them lettuce. But the redhead you have it was originally called Sydney waxbill they are extremely hard to breed. The only way I've ever seen them breed successfully is in a long Avery a wide Avery and at least 3 m high. And the Goulian finches the best way I've ever seen Goulian finches breed in an Avery Avery top of the Avery flight is at least one and a half metres lower then where you put the nest boxes the nesting area needs to be where they fly from the Avery flight and then go up into where the nesting boxes you'll find out the breed better than zebra finches. Diamond sparrows can be very dominant. But I am impressed with your life food. It's a shame you haven't got any white ants as you will find out the parrot finches and the gouldian finches will breed much better. And parrot finches breed much better if they've got the nest boxes in a darker area. If you can avoid it avoid having any African crop feeding birds near Goulian's and parrot finches as the African crop might will kill them they've nearly killed all the Goulian finches in the wild in Australia there's very very few left when I was about 19 I seen tens of thousands of them now I can go into the same areas and not see one you have a beautiful pair of long tail grass finches have you seen the hex grass Finch it is almost the same but have different coloured bags. The other thing that you need to avoid if possible is a dam floor with Goulian finches and parrot finches they will not stand rising damp. I seen you have silver eyes we cool them you call them white eyes. What do you feed them we have millions of them here in Australia and they have blue eggs the nest is very fine like a honeyeater

Beautiful but frightened estrildids in what appears to be a store or quarantine cage. Amadines and munias are my favorite estrildids because their "stubby" bills and overall shape appeal to me more than the bright colors of parrot finches, grenadiers, pytilias, etc. Though Gouldians do combine a pleasingly chubby shape with beautiful colors and an elegant pointed tail.
