I don’t think the grain is wasted or ruined. Raw grain can be put back into the silo

How cool would it be if someone invented an emergency evacuation system that can drain the corn in less then 60 seconds with the press of a button if this happens. Your in there , this happens , press the button

That's a bin, not a silo. A silo is a whole different animal.
@GBooneoh3 ай бұрын
hows that?
@farmerbill68553 ай бұрын
@@GBooneoh a silo is sealed, like Tupperware, for livestock feed with high moisture content. A bin is for dried grain storage with vents and fans to keep the grain dry.

They need to put some ring inside the silo in case stomping like this happens like rods all the way across or a way to climb or at least hold on to the sides

It would mess up the flow of the grain, grain bins are designed without shit like that so they get clogged up

There have been many instances where more than one person was in a silo and one or more have become entrapped under grain or by the auger.

A flotation device, snow shoes, a tube that pumps air to you or exoskeleton rib cage for breathing room would be best, or a combo of them.

Alot of times, you're the only person, whether that's due to not having employees, or everyone else is busy doing something else. The best solution for what happened in the video is to ensure the grain is dried to an appropriate moisture. If it is, it won't mold or bridge, and will flow normally. Then, you don't have to enter the bin until the "sweep" is needed. Which depending on the setup, you may not have to enter the bin with the sweep running. I use old equipment, some of the bin equipment may be from the 1960's, I have to be in the bin to make sure it doesn't overload or underload. It could cut off a finger almost guaranteed, but if my leg was caught, I would assume it would make the belt slip, as it is a small sweep. Take the risks, or go out of business due to costs in upgrading equipment. That's the way of the small farmer, now. There isn't enough capital to remove some of the risks.

Kudos to the Iowa Falls Fire Department on their quick thinking and problem solving skills. It would not occur to me to cut holes in the silo to release the pressure. They saved the life of an obviously quite intelligent and delightfully articulate young man - humanitarian attributes sadly in short supply in contemporary rural America.
