Pranam Swamiji. I love listening to your spiritual discourses, you really work very hard to prepare them. They are so thorough, detailed and very interesting. I have downloaded about eighty of them and I love listening to them attentively when I go to remote places where the internet is not available. Pranams once again, Swamiji.

The BIG problem with translations is that they have to be done according to "the times", and by that I mean according to the language evolution at the time of translation. For example, in earlier times the word Maya meant usually "Illusion" and this meant (at those times) NOT REAL, fake, that it does not exist. Today, the word "Illusion" can mean "not real", "distortion of the senses" or "not properly seen", and better yet, not properly understood. This last meaning, not properly understood, in philosophy, it is related to the "RIGHT VIEW" of the eight-fold noble path. When Shankara said that the world is Maya, an illusion, like the rope and the snake, he does not mean that the physical world is not real, that we do not exist. He means that out of everything, only the ONE cause is truly real... permanent, unchangeable... therefore, non-dualistic. Our perception/understanding of what he taught is at fault. The clue is in his own example of the snake and the rope. Shankara, being an enlighten being was well aware of the limitations of language, therefore, he gave clues as to the deeper true meaning of what he was talking about (again, his example of the snake and the rope). The main point of Shankara is that there is an ultimate source, an ultimate state of being: non-dualistic. From that perspective, everything else is transitory, and full of misconceptions and misunderstandings, illusions, Maya. Therefore, we should strive for that ultimate state of being. He does not mean "not real" as in "it does not exist". But of couse, one way of reaching non-dualism is by "neti neti", but is only "a way", not because "neti neti" actually means that is is not real. For example, you look at the reflection of your face in the mirror. Your face is the ultimate reality, and your reflection on the mirror is Maya, illusion. Yet, the reflection is real, the mirror is real. If this reflection (mirror) was not there, how else would you ever become aware of the deeper truth? This is Ramakrishna's teaching, that everything is real, that everything counts, that everything is part of that ONE ultimate reality, just in a different way of manifestation, vibration, etc. Instead of negating this or that as non-existing, we realize that we are still in IT, in God, in the ultimate source, regardless of what form of manifestation we are aware of, or not, we still live and exist in the Father and the Mother. Therefore, here "neti neti" means "not the mirrow, not the glass, not the relfection" but only in the sense that it is not the real face; and not in the sense that it does not exist. I find no contradiction in what Shankara said or what Ramakrishna said. The way I see it is, based on the evolution of language and human capacity to "understand" concepts: Shankara showed and taught in a very systematic way the ultimate reality of things, then Ramakrishna completed the lesson by showing that the "Temporary" aspect of things is nothing else than the ONE, in multiple ways of manifestation. For example, there is the ocean, and there is a wave. If there are no waves then there is no movement in the ocean. If there is no movement then there is no manifestation of anything, no creation, etc. Yet, through movement (creation) or not, the ocean is still the same ocean, all of it. The wave is not apart from the ocean, it is the ocean. In my humble opinion, the KEY phrase here is: LACK OF UNDERSTANDING. Or as how Buddha said it: RIGHT VIEW. There is no need to show that Shankara was one way only, there is no need to show that Ramakrishna was "all ways" or universal... why so much selfishness to prove one point over the other. Instead, we should say: Thank God Shankara showed us the ultimate reality (non-dualisms), and thank God Ramakrishna shows us all of it, dualistic and non-dualistic, that it all counts. One was the Avatar of an era when people mentalities was so narrowed (they thought Gnana was best)... the other is the Avatar of another era when people's mind, consciousness, is able/capable to encompass or assimilate more. I am sure than the next time Sri Ramakrishna come down to earth (of course under a different name) our human society will be much more evolve and he will be able to give a brighter light to shine upon the darkness of our souls (our lack of understanding). Then, there will be those who will say Shankara and Ramakrisna were wrong... or partially right... or incomplete... but, were are the cones who are incomplete, really. That's why those lessons have to be giving one at a time. When we take a rope for a snake, we do that in our "understanding" of things. The rope is real, but it is not a snake. That is our mistake. Then, non-dualistic "view" is the rope, and the world manifestation is the snake... but it is only a snake because we do not "UNDESTAND" what we are seeing, or we don't see it from the proper "view"... the rope on the floor is lying there in a wiggly shape and if I have the "Right View" I will see that it is a rope on the ground in a giggly shape... AND that giggly shape is the manifestation of the ONE principle (the rope). So, from a non-dualistic view, the rope is always a rope and we "know" that; from a dualistic standpoint, we will also become AWARE or CONCIOUS of the true nature of the rope through it's giggly shape... like the ocean (the rope) and the waves (the giggle shape of the rope). Today, with our modern dominance, control, or understanding of "language" we are able to see that the "rope and the snake" is not a reference to "non-existence" but of right view. That being said, if we go back in times of Shankara, from another point of view in the example of the rope and the snake, one does exist and the other does not. One has a real substance and the other is "mind" made up reality. This example can be used to illustrate many view points from a Gnana Yoga perspective, but it is not as useful with a normal philosophical conversation. There is a huge ocean of difference between knowledge and what Gnana is (Non-Dualistic supreme knowledge). this is a certified hood classic

I think in those days we didn't have projector and screen concept we use for movie. The concious is the Brahm or projector beaming on the body or screen and so I feel it real, not knowing the projector. One projector many screens is the reality. Thanks swamiji. We feel movie more real than reflection on mirror. Thanks swamiji
