How is the water heater? Thinking of doing the same for an off grid camper

Hi I’ve built this whole system but ran into the water over heating. I’ve seen you have used a solenoid to divert the heat. Can some one give me the name of the solenoid used or recommendations and how to install one thanks in advance
@beardedstagg328428 күн бұрын
Hi, if I was to rebuild this I wouldn't go down the solenoid route as it gets hot after a while, you can buy manual diverters and put a temperature sensor in the water tank, when it gets to your required temperature switch the diverter over 👍

@@beardedstagg3284 thanks for the reply. I tried the solenoid yesterday and yeah it went crazy hot but worked at the same time. I have a manual control it want something automatic. I’m currently looking into the rc servo which looks promising but I have no experience on how they work. Might be a trial and error
@flapper111ukАй бұрын
Personally if have the most direct air venting to the outlet and have it turning to heat water. Might take the stress off the diverter in normal operating.

The his and here's is basically a small cabin with an extension so start with the larger side and instead of a full wall they would of sent a wall with a doorway its an add on as such so you can build the other part after and it's just bolted to the main cabin with a joining plank 👍

It's definitely possible but as its a large volume of water you would need something like a car radiator to run the water through and would have to be running 24/7 my design is only for small amounts of water I doubt it would be powerful enough.

Same question as I've just posted on your 2yr old video. Would adding more £10 heat exchangers or larger heat exchangers speed up the water heating process? Oh and Bobil vans sell an almost identical system.
@beardedstagg32845 ай бұрын
I would imagine it would speed up the process slightly yes but you don't want to put to much restrictions on the airflow as it might burn the fan motor out, maybe a 12v water heating element in the tank could help speed it up 👍

beater take heat from exhaust pipe
@beardedstagg32842 ай бұрын
Currently building a water heater that uses the air and exhaust 👍
@PainterD5410 ай бұрын
Here's another one that wrapped the exhaust with heat wrap instead of capturing some heat from the tube to help heat the inside of the building instead of letting it wasted outside? Why not make a longer exhaust run inside the building and get it cooled down before going thru the wall outside? You could also run it thru a finned pipe (like a baseboard heater) and capture the heat that way!
@beardedstagg328410 ай бұрын
I'm currently planning a copper pipe system to be wrapped round the exhaust to heat water for a radiator so something similar 👍
@alisonhamerm.i.q.a232310 ай бұрын
I think you are better off having the heat exchanger on the exhaust side, this would save robbing heat from the air flow
@beardedstagg328410 ай бұрын
Anything that reduces the exhaust flow causes soot build up in the burn chamber, technically yes it would work but would drastically reduce the lifetime of your heater 👍

@@beardedstagg3284 who said a heat exchanger reduces airflow? After all it's how all boilers work.
@beardedstagg328410 ай бұрын
@alisonhamerm.i.q.a2323 putting anything inline of the exhaust will reduce the air flow and cause back pressure, boilers a designed that way but these are simple burn chaimbers and can't handle any back pressure 👍 like a said it will work but will clog up with soot alot faster

I agree! That's why I power. My diesel heater with a 100 watt solar charged battery. This way, even if the grid goes off I can count on having heat. Plus, I made it so I could move the heater inside my home to give us temporary back up heat. Our power grid went down 3 years ago for 4 days, so this is when I started putting in off grid backup systems in my home. Very few governments are pushing for more power generation to serve their citizens before they require us to switchboard electric vehicles. A recipe for disaster.
@lezbriddon11 ай бұрын
Upgrade your solenoid to a 5 quid rc car servo wont have a heat issue. Or you can put a 50p resistor in the positive side of your solenoid supply to reduce the current, I cant really say a value but going out on a limb say 12 ohms 5 watt. the resistor may get warm but thats kind of its thing... problem now is at the reduced current the solenoid may not have the pull, we counter this by adding say a 4700uF capacitor over the resistor (parallel) as its spike of charging current will give the original kick back the solenoid. tbh you may get away with just putting 50w headlight bulb in its positive supply as when thats cold it will give the kick then gradually light up reducing the current. any of the above will extend the coil life
