What did you use to get the Tornado effect. I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this on my FEC layout

That is a trade secret that took me a year or so to figure out. For a donation of only $100.00....just kidding! I used and modified an American DJ "H2O" special effects projector. It had 2 rippled glass wheels that turned in opposite directions and a rotating multi color filter. Their idea is to project a fun effect on a wall. I tore out one of the rotating rippled glass wheels and disabled the motor on the color filter. I machined a small metal plate (in live theater lighting it is known as a gobo filter for Go-Between) with an opening shaped in the tornado shape. The gobo is placed after the rotating rippled glass wheel and the light shines through the moving glass and is shaped by the gobo. I kept the colored filter, now stationary and can adjust it so the light shines between the yellow and green films to give it an eerie look. On a side note, I used old film strip projector lenses coupled to strobe lights to simulate the lightning. I bought commercial gobos with different lightning shapes and mounted them between the lens and the strobe light to project the lightning on the walls. Back to the twister...Once you know how it is built, you can more easily see the action and realize the image is rotating in a vertical circle instead of the perceived horizontal tornado rotation. I also mounted the entire projector on a machined motorized mount that has a very large gear reduction. This pans the tornado very slowly across the wall. It takes about 2 minutes to travel about 5 feet across the wall. My legacy X10 computer program controls all the room effects and starts the projector light and rotating glass as well as the gear motor to move the tornado. It is synched to the soundtrack and there are air raid sirens and a loud rumble from a subwoofer near the projection during the tornado activity. Easy, right? I'm very happy with the results and there are probably endless other ways of making this happen but this is what works for me. Thanks for asking and good luck with your project! TJ

I agree, that would be the ultimate power for these cars. The Phantom locomotive that I used is a real dog for pulling power. I had to add weight in every available crevice to get this filmed! Thanks for commenting. TJ

Thanks for the video giving tribute to Tom he will be greatly missed he did bring especially the O gauge train collecting hobby out to the public with his awesome videos he has inspired me to pursue further in my love of toy trains a purchased a many of trains because of his videos btw Terry you have a awesome layout I've enjoyed seeing the progression when Tom videoed many years ago both times thank you again for sharing the behind the scenes take care and God bless

Very nice! I met Tom at a show, many years ago. He was a perfect gentleman. He knew his Lionel and his books helped me expand my knowledge of Lionel. He will be missed. As a side note, I love the slot cars. I have around 30 sets, mostly 1/32 and HO. I still have my Aurora and Revell Nassau sets from when I was a kid. Great memories.

I didn't own any Lionel trains as a kid, but I owned all of the TM Books videos as a kid. I remember first hearing & seeing Mr. McComas in the Lionel Christmas VHS. He brought the magic of model trains to kids who could not afford them. He and Thomas the Tank Engine inspired my love of trains I carry with me today. Thank you Tom. We'll all miss you. ❤

Terry, Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Tom. I wouldn't be in the hobby if it wasn't for Tom's The Magic of Lionel VHS. My parents bought it for me in the spring of 1994, and I watched it constantly. At 37, I still have it and also have a nice collection of postwar Lionel because of it. Thank you again.

This is a wonderful tribute to tom. I've been a train buff for my entire life starting with thomas the tank engine & friends. than my first exposure to tm was the vhs version of i love toy trains part 1 (the one i had was the 1997 version with the opening and closing theme songs by james coffey). and i was hooked to tm ever since. it was also where my intrest in model trains grew. I've nearly almost bought every video tm has produced (more titles I'd like to buy but my shelf doesn't have enough room). he was a wonderful man that inspired many people in the model train hobby. it's kind of sad tom died nearly one year after greg scholl of his own video company died. they both impacted on everyone of the hobby and it won't be the same without them. wonderful tribute video to a fantastic man.

Very sad to hear of Tom's passing. Never met him, but I would've been very happy to as TM's videos had a pretty big influence on me as a kiddo. Got the 3 rail bug so well I'll never be cured.... Prayers for his family, friends, and all us train nuts everywhere. Mr. McComas will be missed by all.

What a fun tribute to Tom McComas, one of the "great ones". I still have the VHS tape that has your original interview on it, and you could tell from your face that there was funny stuff going on. Thanks for the "back story". By the way, I share your passion for Tonka trucks, but don't have the collection you do. Well done!

LOL, thanks J.J. Funny stuff indeed. In the original 1991 interview Tom was kneeling in front of the shelves where my caps were displayed. He innocently started by tossing a cap to me and told me to put it on. Soon he was flying them at me like a Frisbee. Of course there is probably an hour or more of interview shot just to get 10 minutes of useful content. It was around 2 AM and he finished by throwing caps at me quicker than I could change them. That is what he was trying to capture at the 2014 session except that one made the edit and became the end of the video. I'm glad you are into Tonka trucks as well. In case you haven't seen it, I have a video of those when I had them set up on the same table where my slot cars were at in the tribute video. What a very sweet and emotional tribute video you made there Terry. Tom McComas’ I Love Toy Trains series and his other toy train videos (including both the old Toy Train Revue and new Toy Train Revue series) got me interested into not only trains in general, but into the spectacular model railroading hobby. Tom was a very wonderful and passionate guy in The O Gauge Model Railroading Territory, hell, I would say like he was the king of it, but anyways, it was a great pleasure for you to share us some behind the scenes footage of their second visit back in 2014 and a couple of photos of their first visit back in 1991. And Tom McComas, thank you for everything that you made for us in the model railroading hobby and us train fans both young and old alike. Your legacy for video producing on both toy trains and real trains will never be forgotten 🫡😔🪽

I regret not getting to meet him, he too helped get me into the hobby even though I started with HO, but I did in recent years start collection Lionel as I joined a club that was actually featured in one of his videos, Lionel Nation 8. He is someone the model train community should never forget. PS, do you still collect Marx trains? I have the original Toy Train Revue 3 on DVD and remember the segment on your layout mentioning that you did back then 😋

Thanks for watching and commenting. The only Marx trains I have are those that I inherited from my uncle. Unfortunatley the driven gear on the driver wheels is about the same diameter as the wheel itself and they hang up on my Ross Custom turnouts. I proudly display them though and they mean a lot to me.

That was a beautiful tribute Terry. I started watching TM through the I Love Toy Trains series and it would eventually grow from there with the various other videos that they produced Great Toy Train Layouts of America, Toy Train Revue, A Century of Lionel, Celebrity Train Layouts, I Love Cat Machines and various others. Without Tom and the vast catalog of videos made by him and his crew, I wouldn’t be into trains the same way that I did now. Watching these behind the scenes moments was honestly a real treat to watch and it just shows how much Tom enjoys doing these videos. While he was one of the reasons why I got into the toy train hobby, he was also a major influence on me with videomaking/filmmaking. Tom will be missed greatly by everyone within the toy train hobby and I send my deepest condolences to his family. Rest in Peace Tom and Thanks again

Great tribute video, Terry. The original Toy Train Revue was one of my first avenues to finding TM's content, and are still some of TM's greatest works. It was wonderful to see some behind the scenes snippets. It was like finding these stories for the first time all over again. Thanks for sharing them. Tom was not just an incredible video producer and trailblazer for the hobby as a whole, but what a compassionate man. Every video I got from TM had a unique blend of passion and joy. There will never be another guy like Tom.

What a beautiful tribute to Tom McComas Terry. It was Tom's I Love Toy Trains series that got me into this wonderful hobby, which some of the footage was from your previous layout. I soon started watching all of his other train shows and loved each one of them, which continues to fuel my interest in toy trains. I was fortunate to meet Tom at his studio/store in Michigan City back in December, 2022. He was such a a delight to talk to and I purchased my first Lionel trolley and gang car from him. This past April, I acquired his Commodore Vanderbilt with open spoked drivers that he used in his I Love Toy Trains part 11 video. I was deeply saddened about his passing, but I hope to continue his legacy by producing films on toy trains under my brand. I will eventually do a series of videos as a tribute to him, which will include an overview history on his Commodore Vanderbilt. My deepest condolences to the McComas family and best wishes to you Terry.

That was a touching tribute Terry. I’m so sorry about Tom. I know how much he meant to you and all of us. I got my start with TM books and videos back in 1997 with I love toy trains part 4. I wouldn’t have been in the hobby if it wasn’t for his videos. He helped showed us the Magic of Lionel and model Railroading.

Hi Hunter, yes I do. It hasn't been run in a long time. The gear on the drive wheel is almost the same diameter as the wheel itself so it doesn't negotiate the switches on my modern layout. You have a great memory! Take care. TJ
