I'm sure a builder wouldn't have to ask this question, but: I guess it's possible as well as advisable to somehow close off the cracks that were showing at the very end of the video? Could I have a low ceiling that would turn the interior upper area into a vented loft or attic? Could you put gutters etc on that design? I only ask bc I can only afford contents insurance on my current home and would feel a whole lot better if I knew there was something nice, sturdy, and economical that I could build if tragedy struck. Of course I'd also want the floor raised and if possible, bc I'm an antiquarian, operable transomes above several doors - presuming if the structure design holds up with a larger area. One thing I really like about your design is that the steep pitched roof would lend itself well to solar panels.
@BugoutBill2 күн бұрын
The building as shown is just a frame. It can be modified as needed. Of course the cracks can be sealed. The whole building needs to be trimmed out. You could create an attic, but a loft would be more practical. A couple of large solar panels will work nicely on the south facing roof.
@frostyfrances47002 күн бұрын
@@BugoutBill - TY very much. One last ? if I may. Would a few reasonably small windows interfere with structural strength?
@BugoutBill2 күн бұрын
@@frostyfrances4700 No problem, I'm glad your interested. I would not modify the eight corner wall panels, but other than that you could make window and door openings as big and as many as you want. In this model that's six feet between the corner wall panels. Oh, no place for gutter but you can place buckets at the corners if you want to collect water.
@frostyfrances47002 күн бұрын
@@BugoutBill - I think then I can safely assume that if there can be no gutters, those might also not be needed. Your design seems wonderfully practical to me. Thank you also for making plans available. Once again if I could afford it after a disaster - or even if I just decide to move and downsize - I 'd probably be happy enough in maybe 3 of these units together as a pod.

Wow! Thank you, Bill! I've experienced the knocking on wood, found the "teepees" and other strange structures like an inverted tree impaled into the ground, waaay too big for a human to have done. Much of this was either in Humboldt, Trinity or Tehama counties. But my interactive experience was in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of Southern Colorado. There's a weird vibe when you get into their inhabited areas. It feels like being "looked through." This was where I experienced the wood knocks that responded to my wood knocking, and small things being thrown. The wood knocking was unnerving, but the closeness of the small pebbles and sticks thrown at me had me turn around on the Santa Isabella trail and head back down the mountain. I don't think it was being aggressive, but more inquisitive of how I might respond, but I was alone exploring and if anything happened I was in such a remote location that no one would have ever found me because I hadn't told anyone where I had gone that day. This was in 2013. Amazing the experiences had in the mountains...and not just Bigfoot. Have any UFO stories? I have waaaay more of those to share, and far more interactive than the Bigfoot ones. Would love to share some of those over a bowl of kind weed someday....
@BugoutBill8 күн бұрын
Well, you've had some interesting experiences. I think some people are a magnet for the strange. Of course I have UFO experiences. One of the cabins I had, just about overlooked Beal Airforce base. That was about 30 years ago. I and others saw strange light etc. at my property. I won't go into detail right now, but I believe they can put advanced technology into conventional looking aircraft. Lets say you had "anti gravity" or something similar, why not put it on conventional aircraft as a disguise. The Emerald Triangle is a good place to be if you like unconventional things. I love Northern California and plan on spending some time at Mount Shasta this summer. You might be entertained by another music video of mine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6rVnWSPq8eYb9U Happy 420 !

A Quonset hut has all the feng shui of a shipping container. Not that it's a bad thing
@marcmeinzer885912 күн бұрын
@@BugoutBill It’s entirely possible to fabricate your own quonset hut from scratch using either ferro cement or corrugated metal panels to make the roof as high as you prefer. Then also you can make the end walls almost entirely out of glass if you prefer. Then also you could make a wooden hut with cedar shakes for roofing. It’s really the easiest design especially since the skin is self supporting under tension so the framing can be added afterwards to reinforce the skin. But I recognize that my obsession with quonset huts may be a symptom of some weird form of insanity.
@BugoutBill12 күн бұрын
I envision the best use of my design is to be used for houseless shelters and disaster relief shelters, for a multitude of reasons. I think you can see how a ferrocement Quonset hut may not be practical for that purpose. As far as a having a weird form of insanity, rest assured it's not weird at all and actually quite common.
@marcmeinzer885911 күн бұрын
@@BugoutBill It’s absolutely a fact that cement will not cure when it’s too cold out. Then also it takes too long to trowel all of that cement mixture even when it’s warm for such a method to be useful for disaster event housing. But many of the larger tents are now quonset shaped owing to the good wind loading shape. But I am convinced that the barrel vault shape is the easiest to build even with cinder block constructed atop forms.
@BugoutBill11 күн бұрын
I'm actually a big fan of ferrocement. When I was a kid in Monterey they were building sailboats with it. Ever try hanging a picture in curved wall? Our civilized lives are based on vertical and horizontal planes, that's why tipis aren't more popular. Tipi's have great feng shui. But to agree with you, arches are strong and no reason for them to be hard to build.

Cost can vary a lot, but just for the frame. 20 sheets of ply wood @ $25 = $500, 500' OF 2" X 4" Douglas fir @ $.70 = $350, misc. hardware $200. so far $1,050 . a door is $ 300, windows $300, Roofing $500, paint $300 etc. I hope this helps, You could probably get the shell standing for $2,000 to 3,000.

Are the roof panels and the wall panels made out of the same material? Also what was the cost of this one
@BugoutBill18 күн бұрын
In this model the walls and roof are made with 1/2" cdx plywood. As far as cost I have plans available now for about what lunch would cost. 20 detailed pages with material list and an extensive online tutorial including a real time demonstration of building each of the four primary panels. As far as cost there are so many variables. If I were to start manufacturing them as kit that was shipped to you or you picked up I would try to offer, just the shell at about $25 a square foot, for any model as of 2025. This design lends itself to mass production and that would bring cost down.

@BugoutBill18 күн бұрын
This model all the panels were made with 1 1/2" polyisocyarnurate rigid foam insulation with a light weight perimeter frame made from metal drywall track. The interior surfaces were light weight wood panels. The exterior walls are covered with canvas imbedded in paint. The roof is single ply commercial roofing made of TPO or thermoplastic polyolefin.

What do you mean by canvas painted on? Did you put paint on canvas? Or is the canvas pre-painted?
@BugoutBill20 күн бұрын
On the plywood or rigid foam insulation I put a heavy layer of primer, then imbed the canvas into it. Then more primer to make sure it gets saturated. Using canvas or fabric to cover walls is an old technique used on houses. In fact my 90 year old house has fabric covering the interior walls. I adapted and modified the technique to use on exterior walls. It was initially an experiment and was very successful. It makes for a strong light weight weather resistant surface.

So there is no real framing involved? Does all the odd angles in the roof help provide some sort of structural stability or what's up with all that? I don't know if you mentioned this in the video, but the music was so loud I couldn't hear anything you said except at the beginning before the music started. Anyways, it looks like it would be really easy to build. Just curious where it gets it's strength from, or if it will collapse like a house of cards.
@BugoutBill22 күн бұрын
The strength basically comes from the plywood, like a dome or an exoskeleton. The "odd" angles is what allows the roof to be reduced to eight components. Strong, easy to move and easy to assemble. Those framing pieces don't even need to be continuous but could be segmented. Sorry about the music, It is easy to build. The strength comes from the triangle pieces in the roof, they act like trusses that reinforce each other. As long as the bottom of the valley of the roof is prevented from spreading the building is very strong. The steep roof tends to shed snow. Sorry about the music, I was battling wind noise when I was recording.
@cybermanne22 күн бұрын
@@BugoutBill Thanks for the reply mate. Yeah I suspected the geometry of the plywood pieces would be the key to this build. Very interesting structure for sure. The music wasn't bothering me. Hi, Thanks for the purchase and interest in my design. I'll try to be as helpful as I can. Do you think if I made a video of the construction of the individual panels it would help? I know the angles can be confusing. It can be hard to represent how the plywood attaches to the framing in a drawing, especially if your not use to reading blueprints. Is the information on the plans hard to read? Is there something specific I can clarify? I think I will make a detailed video of building one roof panel and one wall panel. I want people with no construction experience to be able to build these structures. It's actually easier and faster for me to build these structures than conventional building methods. Well good luck and let me know how I can help.
