Absolutely mental that you can complete all the special stages in the first level and have access to Super Sonic for the rest of the game! Great play!

Additionally… it’s 4:30am where I am and I can’t sleep and I audibly shouted “Oh s**t!” when you got clobbered by that mine on the last stage needing 190 rings… So it’s fair to say you got me invested 😄

I’ve always loved Rambo, I could listen to the music all day, they really captured the feel of the movies. Every time I hear it I think of him and Campbell going at it in Rambo III at the end in front of the entire Soviet army.

I never understood limited continues, that was how you got better at games back then before save states. To beat a game you shouldn’t use any in my opinion but they allow you to complete it if you’ve lost all your lives and save a lot of time building up your skill on stages.

Xexyz is similar to Faxanadu, it’s set in space but the game is just as good.

God I love Faxanadu, it’s so classic nes.

The original isn’t flawed it’s an old school perfectly designed platformer which you’d see a lot of back in the 90s and before but the thing Castlevania does is introduce valuable secondary weapons that you have to upgrade to beat it unless you have a ton of time. That never happened back then, normally you’d get the upgrades for the character just have s main weapon you used as you went and the developers would make the stages harder and harder requiring a lot of time to pass. Castlevania says fuck that the levels can be easily conquered but you’ll need to keep changing sub weapons and using them to overcome the sections.
@jaredt2590Күн бұрын
Well the worst is The Castlevania Adventure by far, Konami didn’t know what they were doing on the hardware yet when it came out and you’re going to be playing that one for a long time until you beat it. The music is arguably the best ever though so it keeps you going.

Thanks for this great review. I appreciate your thoroughness and shsring your full opinion of games. Nintendo and Sega kept me busy enough with their games that I never really had time to explore the TurboGrafx 16. The only game that interested me was Bonk's Adventure.

You're not trapped when you run out of keys, every dungeon has a room with skeletons and bouncing orbs, they drop keys and mattocks

Hey, awesome video! I'm checking out some of your old ones since I have seen your recent ones already. I'm lucky enough to have played Ultima 4 (on Commodore 64) when I was a kid. It had a huge impact on me & it was very likely the first game I ever considered my favorite. It's still impressive to look back on, considering the technical limitations of the time, how they got so much gameplay out of so little. I think it's one of the most innovative video games ever made. As for Master System, it was completely off my radar as a kid. Everyone I knew had NES & that is what I eventually got too, without ever considering a Sega. The games really do look pretty good whenever I see footage & it might be fun to check out at some point. Psychic World looks really good!

This game was one of the reasons I started playing SEGA. Shining Force and some others were great too. Black Belt was another gem. At some point I have owned every system and what I have learned is that SEGA suffered because of a terrible sound chip and poor quality control. Finding worthwhile SEGA games is a labor of love and they had an edge Nintendo never had.

The NA box art was actually what caught my eye back in the day as an adolescent boy... but yeah this RPG never really hit with me. It reminded me of Dragon Warrior when I had already played a ton of games better than Dragon Warrior.

Very thorough review. Great job on that. Although, I don't really believe that you feel like this one is up there with Faxanadu. It's such a flawed game for all the multitude of reasons you mentioned. The fact that it is a side scrolling adventure RPG alone isn't a good enough reason to give it a pass. It's just too flawed of a mess. Maybe a 6 out of 10 if we are being extra generous. Certainly not a masterpiece like Faxanadu though. Although I just white knuckled it through Battle of Olympus. If I would have known about the Retry option to keep my olives or found the grind spots to replenish my health easily I might not have felt like it was as harsh of an experience as it was. Maybe I'll warm upto it more on a 2nd playthrough.

I suck at these special stages. Sonic 2 is definitely the hardest of the Sonic games, as it's the only one I've never gotten all the emeralds, nor did I beat the final boss until a year ago.

Secret of Mana definitely was hurt by the lack of disc drive. You can tell they had to cram it into a cart and wrap it up by how poor the last part of the game is compared to the start.

I had never played Snake Rattle & Roll, but knew about it due to a strategy guide I used to own. It looks like it shares some are design (and game design) from Marble Madness, and I'm curious if you ever beat MM on NES.

I dont remember my playthrough from the early 90s but i am pretty sure I would have maxed out on cure potions and never lost a character, I was actually surprised when you were mentioning this mechanic but then i realized my playstyle would have been super conservative back then at 10 or so years old, haha good vid. I know previous me probs grinded for the win on the first playthrough haha

I've had this game for years. YEARS! And I'd pick it up, enjoy the music and cut scenes... Then get slaughtered in the mines. (I didn't have a manual.) Every few years I'd pick it up, try to play it, get slaughtered and give up. I never realized I had to grind to level up. THANK YOU after a couple of decades of frustration, I'm finally enjoying the game!

This game would be amazing with modern remake. The story is actually amazing, I love how you start in the final dungeon but fall off the waterfall. It's so cool when you finally make it to the end only to see its where you started and how the music to the final labyrinth is the same as the music in the beginning of the game. I got this game back in 1994 when I was 6, and I didn't beat it till 2002 lol I remember when Ocarina Of Time came out in 1997 I loved it cause it reminded me so much of Landstalker but then I learned Legend Of Zelda is an older franchise. I actually love the game play, and puzzles.
