The F40 PHs ran wide open to generate the electricity for the rest of the train. They are some of the best sounding EMD locomotives.

The Monon did a lot of street running through Indiana. Now CSX did away with most of the Monon trackage. What still exists ties up with CR assets acquired and the Indiana Railroad.

That’s great footage! Brings back memories. We took every excursion out of Birmingham starting back in the early 80s, including the last one on Dec. 3rd, 1994. We sure do miss it. Those trips, and the men and women that worked on them, are what kept me driven towards a career with Norfolk Southern. I believe that’s Dwight Browning firing. I remember him working most of the Birmingham runs, including a couple behind 1218.

I’m confused. The engineer on the left has a tiny front-facing window, does the guy on the right have one too? Can they actually see where they are going without having to lean sideways out of the window? From where I’m sitting, it looks as it they just Power this beautiful heavy monster down the track with very little idea of what’s actually in front of them. Tell me if I’m wrong.
@PRL2204Ай бұрын
The guy on the left is the fireman. His job is to adequately maintain the fire in the firebox via coal, and water flow from the tender to the boiler, among other things. The guy on the right is the engineer who actually controls the brakes and throttle. They have windows that can see forward, but it's always more fun to stick your head out flapping your tongue in the wind like a dog though 🤪😁

It took me a second to notice, but the Hohman Avenue crossings still had MANUAL gates and no lights all the way up to the 90s. That's pretty crazy. How the hell did it manage to go that long without being upgraded?

I wish I could go back in time and watch when the A's and Y's ruled the N&W ! I have many of the DVDS to watch, but just standing near the tracks when they go by must have been something else! The Y's carried the freight from Roanoke and Bluefield over the mountains, headed West, and then at Williamson, the A's took over at higher speeds on to Portsmouth and Cincinnati. The N&W had over 450 articulated A's, Y's and Z's in their history. Many, if not most, made in their own Roanoke shops!

The only thing about 611 that I'm wondering about is why the chimes sound like the loco has laryngitis. It doesn't sound loud enough to hear from a distance.
