I think it's pretty hard, not only you need to be decent at docking but you also need to perform several areo-brakes and then be very efficient with fuel at return. Still simpler then the last one I did lol.

Someone just pointed out to me that the mass of the asteroid you calculated in your video is two orders of magnitude greater than my calculation. I was worried I made a mistake in my calculations for a moment, but I think I've worked out what's going on. We used different methods to calculate its mass, which in the real world, would yield the same result, but I think we get different results because the game developers fudged the gravity of the asteroid. As far as I can tell, if we calculate its mass based on the density of typical asteroids, my calculation of 1.2564 * 10^10 kg is correct. But if we calculate its mass based on its gravitational strength, your calculation of 5.094 * 10^12 kg seems correct. From this I think I can conclude that the SFS game developers made the captured asteroids' gravitational strength much greater than it should be given its size (around 100 times greater). This makes sense from the perspective of a game I guess. If they didn't do that, a body that size would have barely any gravity.
@rubolo1300
@rubolo1300 Ай бұрын
Yes they definitely made it greater. That asteroid is very very small and yes the gravity is weak but it should be way weaker.

This was really cool! Interestingly, if your goal were to try and stop an asteroid from hitting Earth, you potentially wouldn't need much momentum to deflect it by 1 Earth radius so it misses, assuming you detect and hit it early enough. Your video actually inspired me to make this video with SFS to demonstrate how an asteroid deflection might work in real life using some formulae from my PhD. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i53LgIKPYthmjs0
