I entirely agree. Genesis 1 was interpreted allegorically by the majority of people in the early church up until about the sixth century, so the six-day creation story is 'true' in the sense that an explanation you would give to a very young child about where other children come from is 'true'--it's a figurative account of creation, explaining the importance of creation to bronze age people. No, God does everything supernaturally or naturalistically. Evolution is naturalistic. Miracles are supernatural. The creation of the very first cell could be supernatural or more likely explained by natural phenomena (always avoid 'God of the Gaps' arguments). God takes the credit for everything, in other words. Rowan handled this question in a different way to how I would've handled this. I don't think God 'set up the laws of physics'. He makes everything act according to these laws, in order to give order to the universe, but the laws of physics exist only in the sense that they are descriptions of how things behave. The laws of mathematics are not even created by God but are a part of God. They are metaphysically necessary truths (true in all possible worlds). God doesn't have to 'interfere' with the laws of nature, but rather, He can just cause something to act not according to those laws.

It is utterly incomprehensible WHY anybody needs to juxtapose science and religion. The religious establishment does not deny science in any way,NOWADAYS. And religious faith does not contradict scientific evidence in any way.Nor is science ONLY about evolution !! So where is the logic of arguing on the basis of these false premises.? A scientist should know better. Its ridiculous and nothing else !! Science has no clue whatsoever about the ORIGIN of all things. Whereas religion at least has a hypothesis about that. And who said that God must necessarily intervene in the material world at all? False assumptions don't answer any questions !!

The asteroid that killed the dinosaurs came at just the right time to move them off the world stage and allow the rise of mammals, including us. O ne could argue this is how Divine intelligence intervenes in the world just as was the remarkable coincidence of McClellan finding Lee's battle plans wrapped around a cigar that led to the draw at Antietam, paving the way for the Emancipation Proclamation and turning the tide of the war by keeping foreign powers out of it. As for miracles, read the astonishing accounts of the miracles ,of the great Yogis of the East in our time, and the great healings of Bruno Groening in the 1950's in Germany.

I agree that microevolution is a reality - it is impossible to doubt change. Macroevolution creates problems that science cannot adequately explain as proven. It requires far more faith than I have at present. It seems to me that Dawkins cannot (or will not) distinguish between miracles and magic.

Dawkins is an absolute idiot but clever in that he's sold his personal religion and beliefs to so many under the guise of "science." he once presented the argument for evolution the way a five-year-old might, saying go to the museums and look at the proof of evolution, OMG people buy it! Darwin was insightful and brilliant on many counts, but evolution remains a theory, and Dawkins's obsession with religion and ignorance of his own is a marvel!

Science and especially evolution IS NOT compatible with ANY religion! The crux of christianity ( and of islam and of all the other religions I know of) has already been debunked ages ago! The coming into existence of the species of great apes called the Homosapiens was a gradual event that took millions of years! The difference between the Homosapiens and the other great apes is a GRADUAL difference but not a fundamental one! Do all the so-called "believers" really believe that the Homosapiens are the only species of great apes that can survive their own death by going to an imaginary hell or heaven just because they developed a bigger brain and frontal lobe by the unguided process called evolution? Are they serious? Absurdity squared! So, we are not born in "sin", we don't have to be "saved", the concept of the "original sin" is utter nonsense. There is no afterlife, hell, heaven, soul, etc. It's about time to grow up and to leave all that supernatural nonsense of ANY religion and all those bronze age myths behind and to deal with the REAL NATURAL WORLD!

Whenever I hear Rowan Williams talking I can't help being amazed that someone so thoughtful and wise can be so stupid to believe in a supernatural fairy story, just because that's the religion he happened to have been indoctrinated into in childhood. I know lots of "intelligent" people do have faith but for me there's a massive contradiction. When I was 13 years old in 1975 I hung back after class and asked my RE teacher Mr Troughton how any of the great world religions we were being taught about could be right as they claim since they were all saying different things? He couldn't answer. I knew then it was all nonsense.

In that way I can mislead others away from the God I claim to worship, when ' I ' disagrew with what He says, and do not recieve His personal counsell on what He has had written. "Nature itself opening up into its own depths" is poetic language, but not only intended to be poetic. It is the resultant declaration of a metaphysics which posits God as the grounds of existence and nature as a creation out of Love. This metaphysics is not merely poetry with only linguistic relations between words, but is an abstraction for the particularities which we experience through our senses of the real world which we participate in. The whole idea is that it is a unionizing and synthesis of nature and supernature by analogy.

It would have been easier to say science is science and miracles are miracles. How the two coexist is a mystery. I think Dawkins has an ambition to be omniscient whereas Dr Rowan Williams leaves the mysteries to God. There are mystics within the Christian faith who devote their lives to discovering the truths they need to grasp about God. I think Dawkins puts little trust in feelings and emotions and experiences. One day we will leave these physical bodies that we live in…

Spirituality and religion, when done properly, deal with the essential nature of reality whereas science, when done properly, models the behaviour of nature. There's lots of bad 'religioning' going on and lots of bad 'sciencing' going on. Science can't settle questions about the essential nature reality and religious statements aren't scientific statements. They both explore reality but they operate in different paradigms.

What would mother Theresa gain by denying her own self by devotion to others? If she is a fool, then how does evolution explain a will, which is contrary to survival? Does an ape commit suicide, that is striving to be nothing? Does nature have the choice, the freedom: "to be or not to be?"

He’s making a false dichotomy “either God gets involved or else it cannot be involved in science”, has he ever heard of compatiblism? Does he know that early Christian thinkers like Augustine thought creation was an ongoing process and happening even now that God is constantly creating all things and we are experiencing it, it’s not just deism but God working in and through all things and evidentially and empirically this shows up in the theory of evolution. This is what Rowan means when he says “the underlying divine action” 3:20 it’s not just poetic language, it’s philosophical truth being proposed. And when Rowan was probably about to explain this to Dawkins, the clip cuts ever so conveniently. Dawkin’s Cartesian, empirical epistemology needs refining. The creation of false dichotomies and the lack of philosophical chops in Dawkins has made him irrelevant. He is a great biologist, but why evangelically try to push an agenda to crush a foe he knows little about? It seems misguided.

This is an arrogant little piece of film that wants to make Dawkins look like the one with the Truth. Williams, not surprisngly for anyone who reads him, is much more open to possibility than Dawkins, who is the closed book.

“Either you believe that God wrote science or you believe that God has power over science… You can’t have both” That’s the most ridiculous reductive absurd argument I’ve ever heard, if you have the power to create something, you also have the power to work around it, God according to intellectual Christians created the rules of the universe, but he is not bound by them, God is not highest being, he is true being (divine simplicity), in whom all other things *have* being but are *not* being without Him. Take the virgin birth for example at the end of the video, is it really that absurd to believe that it is a historical, scientific fact that it happened? A being who is by definition above the laws of creation, should be able to do whatever the hell He likes… Even begin the gestation process without a biological male being involved, if He created life in the first place why can’t He do it again…? The objections to it makes absolutely no sense.

agree -- science is the absolute truth...for material reality only. It discovers and it describes (does not create) stuff that is bound by time and space...it simply cannot explain reality beyond the physical. Dawkins is a great science writer (having read most of his books), but is dogmatic here to the point of discrediting himself. Dr Williams conveys that spirit, energy, the universe is beyond the human senses, and human sensibilities....that to grasp the Infinite would require infinite senses and insight, and thus cannot be understood by the limited faculties of the material mind of man or (mechanical or theoretical) science. What Dr Williams describes IS indeed poetic and it is beautiful....metaphysical, timeless, pure, Infinite...
