I don't know how, but I just get an overwhelming sense of loneliness whenever I play Cruise. No matter how much traffic, no matter how many pedestrians, I always feel... alone.

To be a kid on a PS2 with a limited scope of the world, and this is all you are immersed in. The serious tone of being a street racer. What an illustration.

Street Racing games are missing this vibe lately.....the whole atmosphere felt under ground and illegal with risks on the line. Get out there do the race then get lost before cops get on you. Miss that tension

All things considered: Midnight Club 2 was an extremely basic racing game with an extremely basic premise: track down members of the Midnight Club and win. Vehicles were almost as characters in a fighting game, with their own personalities and tastes already imparted on them; we needed not any sophisticated performance or visual modification potential. No feckless daytime street races either; you race from midnight to dawn only -- this is a game about a clandestine organization, and it damn sure feels like it. The game nearly got by on vibe alone. The eeriness and spookiness, even as an adult, still elicits hair-raising discomfort when playing it alone at night to this day. The color palette, the vehicle sounds (which still sound excellent to this day), and the fucking soundtrack. Even the clubby hip-hop from Agallah and Tre Little, the house, and trance music all feel ethereal in this landscape. The only break being from sparse use of Tony Touch's "G'z Up" -- a song that doesn't seem to fit the overall feel of the soundtrack at all -- but is used with absolute ingenuity to create relief with extremely difficult races, or opponents with an old school gangster quality (like Diego).

The sum of all its part made one of the best and most memorable. Music, atmoshpere. Remember how you can learn lot of the characters just by listening to their quotes in-game, Savo for example is a war veteran. Just by listening to the quotes is enough for background info.

This period from the end of the 90s to the beginning of the 2000s was one of the most notable times in this regard, mysterious, industrial and electronic vibe. Games like Midnight Club 2, GTA 3, FEAR, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo, Max Payne, Deus EX... Films like: Fight Club, Matrix, Ghost In The Shell had this. This game's music perfectly represents this vibe, and complementing it even further, the trip hop music genre is what best fits this. I miss that mysterious vibe in entertainment in general in the late 90s and early 2000s...

The most atmospheric racing game ever made. LA, Paris & Tokyo being only at dusk/dawn and night, the chill techno tracks, the staggering detail of the maps, the cartoonish cast that each had a soundtrack song as their theme. As far as street racing games go this was pure *chefs kiss* Shame MNC3 didn't have a similar style and presentation
