In normal people if a portion of the lungs receives no oxygen, the lungs cut off blood supply to that region by constricting arterioles to prevent ventilation-perfusion mismatch. Ventilation-perfusion mismatch essentially means that a significant amount of blood flows through the lungs without being oxygenated, In fact, we have specialized scans and methodologies to measure ventilation-perfusion mismatch. This concept of arteriolar constriction in response to hypoxia is the same reason why, in the fetus, blood doesn’t flow into the lungs. The constriction of arterioles in response to hypoxia is the the reason why patients of COPD have pulmonary artery hypertension, which may eventually lead to right heart failure.

@@ardhendubangal5584 yes, however the way the circuit is set up means that when you squeeze the bag, fresh gas is pushed into the patient, and the gas from the bag (mostly expired gases from the previous breath) are forced out through the apl valve.
