The video is a great help. Key messages are : Water temperature above 18C is much harder on fish as oxygen levels are getting too low Play fish hard and fast to minimize blood oxygen and fish energy loss Tail with a bare hand, gloves tend to rip off scales and expose fish to infection Fish fresh in the river are much more vulnerable to scale loss Those longer in the river seem tougher and acclimatized. I find it hard to understand why it has taken so long to make this move especially given that catch and release is the rule of the day with coarse fish. Above and beyond this the level of over enrichment of UK rivers is appalling. There is so much algal growth in so many rivers that regular aquatic plants are unable to grow. This was comparatively rare in my youth even though there was a massive effort to grow more food for the War and post War effort. The other harsh problem is net pen rearing of salmon. It's the same thing here, a very difficult issue given our rural employment problems in this province. I have been involved in salmon enhancement and introduction into new rivers. Policy here is to release swim up fry into shallow water. They are less vulnerable to predation and will fixate on these areas when they return. Releasing incompetent over fed, unfit smolts is unproductive. Dick Whitaker Newfoundland and Labrador Canada

An experience that you have now held in your memory bank, I do not envy much at all in life, but that is an experience that I do. I would really like to meet him , I should get myself into GLasgow on the next open day. Through the years I have learned a lot from him. I still watch videos. I used to have his programmes recorded for me and sent to South Africa, ohhhh the excitement and anticipation when I knew thay were in the post. That was some years ago as I am back in Scotland again. Thank you for taking the time to add a comment Anne .

@@robbieblair1311 that is what i liked about him, he was'nt a self proclaimed expert like matt hayes, he was just an ordinary guy who loved his hobby! no whooping and shouting, but you could see the excitement in him, loved all his scottish programmes but not so keen on the exotic species overseas as i could'nt relate to them, i wish he was still making his shows

Great to see someone properly invest in their beat by building such a great fishing lodge. I've fished here on many occasions and the expertise and commitment from the ghillies is second to none. The level of success in terms of numbers of fish caught is deserved and is no surprise given their professionalism. Looking forward to visiting again this year.

I fished for salmon in Scotland for a while but tangled with very few so my experience in fighting these fish is minimal. But now fishing for (and catching) large steelhead in the USA, I've noted a real difference in the techniques in playing the fish; particularly the practice of adding alternate side strain, with the rod held at different angles, rather than the uniform high rod you see in this video. It seems that the fight may be prolonged quite a bit by the inert stand-off where the rod is simply held static and high, letting the fish tire itself rather than using the rod and angler technique to do so. Just an observation. Good film. I enjoyed it.

Good comments Jon, brilliantly illustrating my point of fishermen deliberately prolonging that 'magic feeling' of a fish on the end of a line. So after as long as possible a period of keeping a living creature writhing on the end of a hook, they then hold it up in an environment where it's dying from asphyxiation. And 'Anne' of Fishpal think this is helping Conservation. Just to take a picture before throwing it back in, hoping it survives and trying to convince us peasants what a wonderful 'conservationist ' you are. Use a bit of brain and logic, Anne. Stick a fish hook in the end of your finger, get Ken to pull on it for twenty minutes, and then hold your breath for three. Oh, and don't forget to photograph the entire process. I'm sure you'll feel wonderfully 'conserved' afterwards.

I speak as a keen fly fisherman who detests planned catch - and - release Catch and release appears to have become the new Religion. Like all Religions, we should be suspicious of it, especially the Holy Rolling piety of the instructions regarding careful handling . And the unctuous tones of the voice overs eg: "So talk us through this bit, Ken"...And returned", as though the angler has done the fish a big favour. Killing fish to eat or throw back if undersized is what it should be about. Torturing a creature for the pleasure of feeling your rod wiggle, and having a selfie taken isn't sport. It's sadism, and commercial profiteering. 'Ken' should take note.

Hi Oriel - this is a conservation film with Dr Ken Whelan - catching 3 Atlantic salmon on the last 2 days of the Tyne salmon season was no easy task. To see the fish going off strong to spawn and share the message of giving eggs back to the river for future generations is hopefully what we have achieved here. Some rivers are catch and release because of conservation measures. [email protected]
@oriel2297 жыл бұрын
I fully appreciate the difficulty of the catch. I write not as some mad anti but a life long fisherman. I am delighted that the Tyne has been restored to having runs of salmon. I just doubt that any salmon is better off having been made to fight into a state of exhaustion with a hook stuck in its mouth, in the name of conservation. I really think that it's only a question of time before the antis get hold of this . Looked at with any degree of logic, (not, admittedly, that most antis bother with logic), the entire business is far crueler than fox hunting. Ken no doubt thoroughly enjoyed the whole episode of feeling that fish struggling . I really feel you guys should, instead of burbling on about' sharing the message of giving eggs', think this out a bit deeper and just put yourself in the fish's position.

I'm not entirely sure they were appreciated. Anyway, I'm delighted that the Tyne once more supports a salmon run. Any chance of a concerted campaign against this vile business of salmon farming? Now THAT would have my wholehearted support. So many wild strains of sea trout have been wiped out.
