I had the great honour to visit Maestro Streicher at his home in the Würzburggasse, in the 80s. He and his wife were so kind and warm-hearted. All afternoon i didn't have to say anything because he talked and talked about his travels and adventures. Showed me his bass and Dölling bows, let me hear recent recordings that he had made, and gave me a book "Virtuosen in der Anekdote", with a written dedication. An unforgettable man and a fantastic musician. One of my opera colleagues, Janos Csikos, had the great fortune to study with Ludwig Streicher and i considered myself so lucky to play next to him and to learn from him. Great memories...

Splendid...those were the days when the great soloists each had their own strong personality and character. Streicher, Pošta, Karr. Three giants, all different, all deeply moving in their own inimitable way. Grandioso.

I had a lesson with Herr Stretcher when I spent a semester in Wien. Memory is hazy, but I might have played on that bass. Most clear memory was how massive his hands were. I have big hands, but it was like shaking hands with a tree stump.
