Great video! One of my favorite fish to catch! I have never caught any from the shore. From my kayak I used a 3/4oz blue and chrome Ratteltrap on a medium heavy 7ft freshwater bass rod with a freshwater bass baitcasting reel and 10 lb mono. Once out in the La Jolla Kelp I was fishing near a 1/2 day boat. Once they started chumming I casted out that Rattletrap and gave it a steady wind back in. I ended up catching 21 bonito and 3 log barracuda. You can only keep 5 bonito. That lure had the finish completely chewed off of it! My arms were so tired I left them biting and paddled in. What a great day that was!

Why is it's tongue like that?
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT21 күн бұрын
It’s the swim bladder of the fish! It’s called barotrauma. For certain species of fish, mainly rockfish, when you reel them up from deep waters, their bodies aren’t acclimated to the pressure changes. So, their swim bladder expand like that. It doesn’t happen to all fishes though. There’s a few exceptions
@kylevick339021 күн бұрын
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT so once you reel it in, ot dies from that? Or is it possible to release it?
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT21 күн бұрын
@@kylevick3390it’s possible to release it. California regulations now require a fish descending device. You pretty much clip the fish onto the device, and the clip releases or the fish shakes off once a certain depth is released

Good video. It’s not my thing, does not look like fun at all to me. I have two buddies who do this a lot and they told me “if you ever do it just make the stretch and pay for a private boat”. The way he was making it sound in the long run a private boat with maybe you and a friend is worth it in terms of funds spent vs fish caught ratio.
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT23 күн бұрын
I've done both and I feel like sometimes it really depends. Both are pretty different and fun experiences and it all depends on what you want to target. I think there are times where the night bite is hot, and really only the sport boats have the capacity to target bluefin at night. They even have the benefit of having enough bait to maintain a good chum like to keep the fish around them. You could be paying the same amount going on a private 4-6 pack charter, but you may get more fishing time from a sport boat. There's a lot of different factors that come into play like where the fishes are and how they're biting. I think both are fun either way! It's worth a try and both are a different learning experience. I went out recently on a buddy's boat and it wasn't a great day out. We saw some 6-pack charters skunk, and its about $1,200 per person...

What was your speed there and back? How much fuel did you use for the trip? I'm still too scare to take my 17 footer to Cat.
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT24 күн бұрын
We averaged around 23mph! I used about about 15-18gallons (about 2/3 of my tank). I’d say we traveled around about 70 miles. It’s definitely a cool experience. It was a bit bumpier than expected, but we stayed dry for the most part. Just gotta watch the weather forecast and be mindful of the afternoon winds when you head back. We left around 4:30am and got back by around 2-3pm. Hope that helps!

@@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT Thanks for the info Jason. My fuel tank is smaller at around 20gallons, so I will have to bring along a couple of 5gallons cans. My older 2002 90hp is not as efficient.

Very sweet video bro, I am wanting to get into spearfishing. I been heavy into kayak fishing and now have just snorkeling one time I was like I need to get out there and do some spearfishing. My only concern is my breath holds, that part does scare me a little bit. What was your time when you started and where are you at now with your holds? Any tips on gear and technique?
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYTАй бұрын
Thanks for watching! I’d recommend taking an FII Level 1 course or looking to clubs to meet other divers. It helps a lot and you’ll get to practice and learn dive techniques. Spearamerica is a local dive shop that could help you out on gear. For me, it really depends on the day and how comfortable I feel sometimes. When I’m hunting, I’m usually holding my breath between 40sec to 70sec. Definitely learn about shallow water blackout. Your breath hold will get better as you keep going out and get more comfortable in the water. Resting long enough in between your dives is important as well. Hope that helps and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

What are your thoughts on the DDT dumping and potential risks
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYTАй бұрын
I know there are guys that have been eating fish from here for a while now and they seem to be fine. Eating too much fish can be an issue because of mercury poisoning and the Department of Fish and Wildlife post signs saying fishes are contaminated in certain areas. Either way, I really think it just comes down to eating in moderation. I don’t consume fish on a daily/weekly basis

I have the same exact setup but I throw arigs with it or Id fish way bigger fish than spotties lol. That being said be careful when your casting out not to get the line caught on the hookkeeper, at 2:05 you catch and fish and it looked really difficult to reel because your line was caught on the keeper. Actually I noticed you put the line on the hookkeeper, you do it again at 4:00 cuz your pulling out line. Then you do it again lol bad habit just be careful cuz reeling in a big fish like that your gonna lose it, basically like having the line caught around one of the guides on your pole.
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYTАй бұрын
Thanks for the tip man! I’ll keep that in mind next time. I’ll throw some big swim baits and what not here and there with this set up. I usually pull out line like that to fix any birds nest or to let it sink faster. I feel like there’s a little disadvantage since I’m having a left retrieve with this rod. The hook keeper is in the left side so it’s more prone to get caught around it
