Even though it seems you've cleaned it very well there could be oil residue from a previous use stuck to the pan like a film. That would create the smoke or steam that you were talking about, and also impart a taste. The base metal itself shouldn't really put that big of a taste in your food if it was cleaned well. I bought vintage unis and had the same thing happen at first. I have a regular Sunbeam and a non-stick "Teflon II" Mirro brand both from the 1960's I believe. The non-stick mirro was never used I don't think because the coating is perfect. They work great and I love them. The way I fixed it is really really scrubbing it well, wiping it with a high temp oil (avocado), heating it up, and then scrubbing it again. That got rid of any residual taste from previous use or dirty oxidizing metal. Hope this helps somewhat 😊

Might be genuine deadstock? Design houses do sell off the remaining fabric after they're done with the run of making their garments. The bigger the name, the less likely they are to try to use everything up the way home sewists do.

You are overthinking the fabric thing. I saw a gorgeous Carolina Herrera dress. I fell in love with it. I found the designer fabric at Mood on line and bought it - wish I had bought more. I used a McCalls pattern similar to the $3k dress and made it. I was so happy and it cost me $72 in fabric instead of $3k.

7:31 I haven't tried it myself, yet, but there is a method of gathering without a gathering foot where you put the tension all the way tight and the length of the stitch as long as you can, and it apparently causes a ruffle. I'm sure you can probably find someone someone in KZbin who can explain it better than I do but I am definitely gonna try it next time I am making a skirt!
