Didn't the British and French have TBDs as well? I think the Brits called theirs the Chesapeake. The French had a limited number of SBD-1 and 2 Dauntlesses, too if I remember right.

Hi Bob, the aircraft you're thinking of was the Vought SB2U Vindicator which is somewhat similar looking to the Devastator and was also not a very successful military aircraft.

Man that's too much glass for my taste. No wonder they called those greenhouse canopies. I'd shell out for an Eduard masking set myself. Your steady hands made short work of it, though. Great work, Maestro.

Ironic that the Mitsubishi B5N Kate was the Japanese doppelganger of the TBD, but the Kate ended up doing a lot more damage and was more feared. Chalk it up to the veteran IJN pilots that had experience in China and Malaya, and the Kate being equipped with armor-piercing bombs made from naval shell casings, and the Long Lance torpedo as well...

Here's a question for you, MA. Since you live in Arizona, do you buy your hobby supplies and kits from Andy's Hobby Headquarters? He's an Arizonian like yourself. He's a panzermeister modeler, his channel is quite informative, especially regarding new armor kits.

Hi Bob, I do purchase items from Andy from time to time. I actually met him a few years ago at a model convention he was hosting up in Glendale, Arizona. I give him a lot of credit for getting me back into model building. He's a great ambassador for the plastic model industry.

@MaxAfterburner Cool. I go to kind of the Southeast Michigan version of his store called Great Lakes Train and Toy. It's pretty much an every genre hobby store that stays competitive with the online guys by having a small warehouse storefront and mail order.

That corrugated duraluminun construction of the wings looks like it belongs on a barn or a garden shed. Very representative of a pre-WW2 aircraft. Junkers in Germany were known for that construction method ever since WW1, most famously used on the Ju-52 transport and a lot of the Kriegmarine's Junkers seaplanes.

IMHO, the Devastator was a torpedo bomber for the late 30s, forced to fight longer than it should have because of procurement mistakes made by the USN just before WW2. No fault against Donald Douglass, but I'm glad he hired Earl Heinemann to give us the Dauntless, Skyraider, and all the cool 1st-3rd gen naval jets Douglass would later be famous for.

Those poor Devastator crews bought an opening for the Dauntlesses to hit the IJN carriers at Midway. The USN needed the Avenger sooner.

You mentioned the seam lines not being great, well that is actually true on the actual aircraft, I have been to see grey ghost and I noticed a few spots where the seams were hand fitted and not very well at that. So realistically that would be correct.

David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Monday, 9 September, 2024) Round the time you made your build video, I had bought two of this kit (each round 90 USD MSRP), one to build with the landing gear down, all panels, bays, canopy open to display the interior detailing, and the other in flight. I started with a test-fit of the major pieces, finding the fit both seamless and effortless to effect. Well into the assembly, however, I simply could not bring the upper and lower halves of the blended fuselage-wing structures together; one side would close with its counterpart, though the other despite my most determined effort obstinately remained round 4 or 5 mm (0.2”, or 3/16ths inch) apart on the horizontal. With the interior sub-assemblies in place, one half of the airframe inexplicably was discernibly wider than its counterpart. Using as much force as my bony, achy fingers could apply only stressed and deformed the polystyrene, yet still failing to close the gap. Had I continued assembly, and I somehow had managed to force together the two components, affixing them with gel cyanoacrylate (or maybe one of the new bonding agents), the polystyrene immediately adjacent to the glued area most likely would have cracked and split eventually. Short of that, it would have left a gap requiring strip stock, putty, etc., to fill; even worse, this would have resulted in a visibly asymmetrical model! I want Hasegawa to account for this. I would like a refund, though it is not merely a matter of the price of the kits: the paints, the mixed-media aftermarket ejection seats, a seated USAF pilot, and Eduard’s photo-etched detail set.

@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner Ай бұрын
