I had heard that the Ankou was once Prince Ankou, Celtic royalty and considered the greatest hunter of his time. He roamed the countryside in his four wheeled chariot stalking game and garnering trophies until one day he claimed to be a better hunter than Death itself. Unfortunately for the good but boastful prince death heard him. Appearing in front of his path from behind a tree Death offered Prince Ankou a wager, who could kill three Deers the quickest. If the prince won, he would live on the world until the end days and be its greatest hunter but if he lost, he would be deaths hunter for all time. It didn't end well for Prince Ankou. Every time Ankou sighted arrow or spear the deer would die just before a shot could land. One instance a large fungus rotted tree branch fell on a running deer just in time to crush the deer and stop the arrow. The next time the deer ran straight into a pit at such speed it broke it neck as the prince's spear pass through where the deer was before dropping the pit. One deer he chased down a game trail but as he closed in and released his arrow a rabid bear charged from the side and tore out the deer's throat, Ankou's arrow hit the mad bear and was torn to piece by the bear. As Prince ankou stood over his own body watching the bear maul his corpse death appeared at his side. He said to the prince "I command you to travel the world and collect the souls of the dead for me, hunt down the wayward souls and bring them to the next world. Don't look so glum Prince you shall be the greatest hunter in the world and live on it until the end of days."
