Before PTS and GPS we had Stick and Rudder by Wolfgang Langewiesche. I taught in a 7AC Champ that rented for $3.00 per hour wet. We had more incidents and accidents but the same number of fatalities. Airman Certification Standards are far less effective total energy management. Ground effect was 50% of my total energy available midday in summer at Monte Vista Colorado 7600' where I taught in the Cessna 140. Without me Army and several under $10,000 airplanes including a Stearman crop duster, I wouldn't have been able to afford to be a crop duster and pipeline patrol pilot for fifty years. I quit teaching in tailwheel airplanes when owners began expecting me to save the expensive airplane over teaching them how to fly it. I teach dynamic proactive rudder movement, walking the rudder pedals constantly on short final, flair, touchdown, roll out, and taxi to nail/bracket the centerline between our legs. That technique cannot be taught while riding the controls. In the cheap and easy to rebuild airplanes, I would let a lazy footed student ground loop after rolling fifty feet or so. I also taught arriving at ground level in three point attitude all slowed up and ready to squat as Wolfgang says the experienced pilot does in his "stall down" landing. Read Stick and Rudder, get a twenty thousand dollar beater, get a really old crop duster instructor, and learn to fly rather than learn personal minimums. Have more incidents and accidents but fewer fatalities.

I'm supposed to trust this _________ with flight training? He was having trouble delivering the script that Ai generated for him, and he never once questioned the validity of any of the crazy statements. I'd fly with Blanco in his 1946 Piper before I flew with this guy in a 2024 glass cockpit.

Your statements are flawed. There is absolutely no evidence that newer airplanes with modern automation technology will not kill any pilots. Prove me wrong on that. Have a look at automation dependency for instance. That can greatly hinder situational awareness and make a pilot not able to handle icing and turbulent conditions. Others before me have already commented about this and I absolutely agree with them. Also tell me how and why CFIs with thousands of hours in a 1960 C172N and PA28 are being hired by regionals in 2024? If you can't answer this, then this still shows your statements are flawed.

I've only got 7.5 hours and I know this is clearly false. The FAA makes it mandatory that aircraft pass an airworthiness certificate. Also parts are required to be overhauled when they reach a certain number of hours. There is nothing unsafe about Cessna 152 from the 1970s so long as it has been taken care of. Modern aircraft may be safer, but they are much more expensive to buy or rent. And we all know how expensive it is just to get your private pilot license.

Also modern airplanes tend to make pilots become greatly dependent on autopilot and not their own skills if not utilized properly.

The comments are mostly overly harsh. Im a non pilot. My drives and proficiencies and career are in engineering. I have good foiled technical skills, and a string capacity for thinking out of the box in a discipline where mistakes aren’t going to get anyone killed. But I don’t have the mindset of a pilot: that requires strict adherence to procedure. So as much as I love aerodynamics and the physics of flight, I’m not likely to get a pilot license. Just identifying and respecting limitations. Personally, I’ve pretty much decided not to even ride in a light GA plane. Too much can go wrong. And few GA plane owners have the means to fully maintain them. On the other hand, I relish flying as passenger on a major airline. There’s a world of difference in maintenance, pilot skill and judgment, and ATC involvement.

I fly a 1971 Cessna 150L, and I’ve added every safety related PMA/STC, made it IFR certified, replaced vacuum instrumentation with glass (2 Garmin G5s), and am having a Trio Pro Pilot installed this month. Eventually, I plan to have the G5s replaced with a PFD; so I’ll own, probably, the only 150 TAA on Earth.

A year ago I was hired on the 1900 freighter with 650 hours. Company hired 250 hour FOs. Was eligible for captain upgrade 4-5 months later. Now starting on the 737 with 1100 hours. Some sectors like leisure is slowing, cargo is recovering. Plane delays are temporary, companies are looking for alternatives. 2025 might be slow but 2026 I estimate will be a scramble again. Keep studying, logging any kind of hours and get your ATPL exams written as early as possible. Spend the time to prepare for interviews and sim evals. People are still showing up to airline interviews thinking they can wing it because they have thousands of hours and are getting passed over by less experienced pilots. Good luck!

I logged 360 hours on the Antonov An-2 as a PIC. But I see no significant difference in safety between an An-2 built in Poland in 1990 and a Cessna 172N built in Kansas in 1978, which I used as a primary trainer for my PPL and CPL. Both aircraft may have a long lifespan of their airframe. Everything else is just maintenance. And operating cost, of course... 😂

My guess is there was NO research done here, like NONE. You do know that vintage planes are in probably better and safer condition than your average rental right? You know how many people are killed by automation? Learn stick and rudder skills in a cub with little no gauges and you will never forget how to fly, even when your electronics crap out.

Fear mongering at its best. There is no aircraft built today, that can't kill you and won't try. If YOU the pilot give it the chance, it bites! I flew professionally for 52 years, no major incidents. Accidents are a caused occurrence, professional pilots are trained to recognize a thereat to safety and react to the threat properly. By the way the new light aircraft have lots of bells and whistles on them. Do not get wrapped up in the teck, especially if you are VFR. Old aircraft that are well maintained are safe to fly, the pilot has to be proficient on type.

There's so much wrong with this video it's hard to pick just a few points to argue. You claim that new airplanes are safer than old ones, but your business is flying LSAs, which actually have a higher accident rate than type-certificated aircraft, so the whole premise of the video is false. You'd have done much better to show the usual old beater 172s instead of nice Stearmans and AN-2s. As if you could even build time in those airplanes. No one's done that for at least 75 years.
