I had the joy of driving one of these during an open day at Snowdown Colliery, Kent in the early 1980s. Friendly Scottish driver. There were two Avonsides and an Austerity. (One Avonside and the Austerity in steam.) Great day. Big spanners, plein hammers, a gas welding set, a pillar drill and a bench was all that was needed to keep them running! Not even a lathe. It was surprising that the Avonside steamed willingly on a very thin fire with the grate barely covered. A lot of slash in the bearings allowed for rough track.

I was very fortunate to have a full roundtrip Pass on the footplate of the lovely "Dolgoch" in Sept 2000..... AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY!! Mike Green was the Driver, and the Fireman was Len (? -- a Eurostar Driver on a Volunteer holiday!)..... Dolgoch was well-kept and smooth steaming, and liveried in an attractive "Apple Green"..... but I like her much better in the "Dark Red" as shown in this video!! LONG LIVE THE OL' LADY "DOLGOCH" !! 😃 😜 🚂🚃🚃🚃............. !!!!

Spoiled by the sudden over-loud pounding drums and guitar between 04.15 and 06.38., and 11.44 to 12.36, the rag-time piano at 13.02, - and so on.

Love the entire video - it's so difficult to pick a "best" shot, but I really like the 69 stopped and then moving off from the trackside - it's awesome to see it move away and to hear it as the engine powers up and it moves off. Another great video of a great day!
