Since, after the failure of the 1930, "The Big Trail", (which I liked), John Wayne was reduced to playing leads in "B" westerns, I doubt that he would turn down major roles in 1936's "The Plainsman" or 1939's "N.W.M.P."! Today, we think of Wayne always being the "superstar' that he became, but in the 30's, he definitely was 'second string' to 'stars' like Gary Cooper or Clark Gable, so picking him for parts, over them, is hard to believe!

Replace Angie Dickerson with Charlene Holt in El Dorado and I'll agree with your list, except I'm ambivalent about Marlene Dietrich. Never cared for her at all. Perhaps switch her out for Lauren Becall from Blood Alley and The Shootist.

I actually like it when John Wayne dies as it shows he is not invincible, but I am so happy when Vincent Price is able to make it through a film! I have seen at least 14 films so far where he doesn’t die! My favorite of Wayne’s death is in “The Cowboys”.
