2 recommended improvements to this technique: 1) When wrapping the "dead end" of the strap around the first side of the roof rack, instead of just feeding the strap around the hook, feed it through the eye. (Just an extra level of security in case something goes wrong.) 2) Put a single 180 degree twist in the flat portion of the strap that goes over the ladder - this will prevent the straps from whistling at high speeds but will not impact tie down strength.
